The five Channel-facing South East stations (Dover, Ramsgate, Margate, Dungeness, Walmer) launched a combined 311 times in 2025.In 2024, the RNLI launched 114 times to small boats, just over 1% of national call-outs, saving 58 lives, including children.
Of the RNLI's national total of 109 Channel small-boat launches, virtually all of them would have come from this cluster of stations (Dover and Walmer are explicitly the ones repeatedly named in RNLI's own case studies as the primary responders).
Regional percentage (launches):
| Launches | |
|---|---|
| Total launches, 5 SE Channel stations | 311 |
| Channel small-boat launches (national figure) | 109 |
| Channel share of these stations' launches | ~35% |
Quite a difference a little scrutiny makes.
Headline figuresThe public reacted strongly. Donations jumped by 3,000%, and visits to the volunteer page rose 270%
