Many, many years ago I like most youngsters drank under age & smoked, not earning a lot of money I decided to smoke & not drink reason being that I could smoke all week for roughly the same money that I spent drinking for maybe 1 or 2 nights.
A fella I worked with tried to stop me smoking but I said to him, 'no problem I can stop when I want' (easier said than done).
Ten years later, smoking pipe, taking filters off the fags (40 a day) and had tried to stop many times all to no avail.
Then out of the blue I was holding my daughter & she said Dad you smell. That did it...Not had a drag since.
You have to have a need/want to quit & I don't think you can stop for £££ reasons.
Nothing worse than seeing children in school uniform smoking on the way to school.

I looked at the £14 per week approx, on cigarettes ..... The macho part says, "So what, I can afford that and more."
The head said mused ..... £14 per wk in late '93 with bank rate around 5.4%. BS safe investment earning say 6% gross, 4.8% net.
£14 per week would need investment of near .. 14 x 52 / 0.048 = £15,166 to generate an income to fund the smoking.Quite a nice little bundle.
Gave up !!
Began saving £20 pm for extra to normal car servicing, saved the rest.
Never looked back ... I can mingle with smokers etc no problem .. It feels good. .. removed any thought of car diy, and saved money !!
There we go ... lots of reasons (feel good factoring), beside the obvious (health, self and others, etc,etc)!!

What I didnt say was that when I started to play golf, I used to justify the expense by saying ' Its the money that I used to spend on fags', I dont know how much fags are these days but my guess is that the £1000 a year I spend on golf is probably less that being a 40 a day man.
Just look at all the time you have when not smoking, 10 minutes for a cig, 40 a day its a lot of minutes.

The need / want was there as with many smokers ... I just listed the feelgood factors.
Time is an interesting one, never came into the equation as I could work and smoke in those days.
Anyway, job done whatever the reason ... end result .. excellent !!

Pip 6' 1". But I am still overweight. Mind you, to get to the lower end of BMI band, I would have to be 11 1/2 stone, which would be impossible. As an adult, I have never weighed that little - even when I was fit & skinny!!

Never trust those BMIs. I am 6'2 and 16 stone. It reckons I am just under obese but the thing is I am a lot fitter than most of the people I train with at the gym, and they are all in the centre of "normal" on the BMI!
BMI = mass/height^2.
Well, last time I checked I was 3-dimensional so surely it should be mass/height^3?
Plus there is no accounting for whether you are megamorphic, micromorphic or the middle one.

, forget about the weight charts. I'm about 2 stones overweight and a few years ago when I was ill with chicken pot ( yes I didn't have it in my childhood !) I went right down 11 1/2 stone which is supposed to my ideal weight and boy you could count all the ribs on me, I looks awful.

Thanks for the empathy guys! Yeah, I really cant see myself at my "ideal weight" either. And even if a miracle happens and I get there, how do I stay there?

I worked with 3 to 8 year olds and feel that if they smell of smoke they must be inhaling it so its not a great start to life for them. I am glad your heartstrings were tugged by your daughter, unfortunately it doesn't work often enough!
