Did anyone see the video of bumbling plod with their little tazers? If there had been three attackers or one with a gun they'd be running for the hills. The French or American cops would have dealt with him.

I'd prefer not to see hundreds of armed police on the streets quite frankly, considering the amount of relatively harmless nutters they have to deal with on a daily basis who'll end up getting shot instead of the police using de-escalation tactics which work best. Wasn't the loon in question using only a knife? What can actually be done about that?

So why not ban knives Joe in the event a terrorist get's hold of one? What can you actually do about it ? ..

You have an armed force and shout "Drop the knife".

A friend on holiday in America with his wife and their two children under 10 was driving a rental car when he was stopped by police who immediately pointed a hand gun at him. He was suddenly dragged out of the car and viciously spread eagled on the ground with the muzzle of a hand gun pressed into the back of his neck. His "offence" was reaching into the door pocket to get the rental document. The officer said later that he thought ( if officers there can think ) that he was going for a gun. With two small children in the back is he going to start a gun fight with two armed police officers.

Back at the hotel they called the airline to get the next plane back to the UK. Air line desk agent said they couldn't change the flights, to leave early they would have to buy new tickets. He explained why they felt too scared to continue the holiday. The agent immediately agreed to arrange for them to catch the next flight to the UK at no extra cost and said they were not the first tourists to experience this police brutality.

British police are far far better trained than the majority of police in the USA. Even so I would not want to see every British police office with a side arm. American criminals carry arms for " self defence" because they know all the police will be armed. Here in the the UK criminals can be fairly certain they will not be shot dead by the first officer to arrive so few carry arms. And those that do seem to have them for "self defence" when attacked by rival criminals.

That's all fine and dandy if you think Paris style terrorists are simply criminals.

On this occasion, they were dealing with one nutter with a pocket knife.

Such events are quite common.

He was disarmed and arrested.

Situation normal.

It's lucky the Met didn't panic like you.

There will have been armed officers available if the situation warranted it.

Presumably you have seen the comparable case of an American nutter with a penknife who was shot sixteen times in Chicago.

Joe. There is a big difference between criminals and terrorists. Most criminals want to live to enjoy the life they finance by crime. Most terrorists are happy ( brainwashed ) to die "for the cause".

Therefore there is a big difference between the methods used to fight crime and the methods used to fight terrorism. The police we see on a daily basis are crime fighters, those who fight terrorists are mostly covertly looking for terrorists in the hope of arresting them and sucessfully charging them before they can commit an act of terror.

I'm pretty sure that was not true of IRA terrorists, who only blew themselves up by mistake and avoided gunbattles with anyone armed.

The Omagh bombing, for example, was successful in killing 29 and wounding over 220, with no suicide bomber involved.

I agree there is a difference between a criminal and a terrorist but surely anyone shouting 'Alan's snack bar' or in this case 'For Syria', should be treated as a terrorist.

What made me laugh was the copper telling the woman to leave the area (quite aggressively) but she took absolutely no notice.

If you are dealing with a nutter, you can expect them to shout all sorts of things. He might equally have been shouting "I am Santa!" or "Death to gays!" or "No Pope here!"

The police say they are treating it as a terrorist event due to his words. Perhaps they will find some other evidence to support the suspicion. Perhaps not.

If you are right it will be a major coup to capture a terrorist alive and have the opportunity to interrogate him.

That was a car bomb left in a parked car and warnings were given in plenty of time. Had the location of the bomb given in the warnings been accurate the death toll would have been much lower and, probably the bomb would have been found and dealt with before it exploded.

An attack by a couple of people with automatic weapons and an intent to kill as many as possible before they themselves die cannot be compared to a bomb left in a parked car.
