Folks,

In your experience, where are the most common places, in a pretty standard 1960's house with ground floor joists, to find the access to the under-floor space? My first point of call is going to be the hallway by the front door. Anywhere else I should look before resorting to an orifice of my own making?

Thanks holmslaw; that's useful.
There has been some rewiring done in the kitchen since new (looks about 25 years old), but everything else looks original. The CU is the 60's type with brown bakelite fuses (wired), but it's in the garage. Needless to say, it's getting a rewire.

in the "alcoves" either side of the chimney breast is a good place ( since the boards will be short if they run that way )

you might find that there is no clear underfloor route from one room to the next, the walls carying on down to the footings etc with only very small gals to run services through

You can easily make your own with a circular saw

Yes - that's always an option:

Hmmm. Wasn't expecting that and it's a good point. My parents' house (1930's) did have person-sized gaps underneath (I spent some considerable time down there as small boy poking up cables for my dad!).

Many thanks everyone.

Alot of traditional built houses around here have front to back joists, you will normally find access and the very front of the house, at the very back and on either side of the dividing wall. there will more than likely be dwarf walls at 4 foot intervals too which you need to get over, some rods or trunking lid can help.

I saw the title to this thread and thought it'd be about the Fritzl family or something. 8)

He might still be down there

He'd be like Gollum now... making little copper rings out of bits of cable.

I'll report more on that aspect when I'm down there!

are the cables definatly under there? just because there are wooden floors doesnt mean that the cables will be under there.
