We are being replaced

I don't think it actually matters what 'intelligence' specifically is.
As I've just written, I think that it's absolutely crucial.
The worry is that 'man' will design machines which are more intelligent the he is.
How can we possibly talk about "more intelligent" if we don't know what "intelligent" is?

Is this possible? I would say obviously not.
For a start, as above, it is currently a meaningless question - so there really can't be an answer, 'obvious' or not.

That this is being promoted now as if it has already happened is the really worrying aspect - just more brain-washing to dupe the masses.
I agree totally, and that's the crux of what I've been saying. It seems that almost anything done by a computer is coming to be described as "AI", even if the computer has merely executed explicitly programmed algorithms, and that this is being used (largely unnecessarily)to frighten people. I don't see that sort of machine function as indicating any degree of "intelligence", and nor am I convinced that anything yet achieved by a machine qualifies as involving what most people would probably regard as "intelligence".

Having said all that, I think there is certainly some scope for fears (as science fiction writers have recognised for many decades), since I really don't think that we can say that it is impossible that we will one day be able to create machines which can act 'autonomously' (I suppose that could be taken to mean 're-programme themselves').

Let's face it, the day will presumably come when (if we are 'allowed' to do it) 'we' will be able to create new 'life forms' (by manipulating DNA) - and if we do that, there will be no telling what we would end up with in terms of 'intelligence' (whatever that means) in the new life forms we had created.

On the other hand The Silver Ships Series paints a more optimistic future.
Of course. Increasingly sophisticated and able computing has the capacity to be of great (and 'non-frightening') benefit, as does true "AI", if/when we ever actually see it (as I've said, I'm far from convinced that we yet have) - but it is nevertheless wise (and probably important) to be aware of (and attempt to avoid) some of the potential downsides - which could possibly be very serious.

The way that we have "dealt with" the problems caused by social media platforms (eloquently described in a recent article I read as "sewers of bigotry and lies") shows that as a society we are utterly unprepared to do a single thing about the downsides of AI.

Unprepared to do a single thing other than 'moan about it' - as is also the case with the problems of social media platforms.

We seem to be a nation (and world) of people who like to do a lot of talking, but little or no 'acting'

In fact being pessimistic it could be said that intelligence and social media don't go hand in hand.
Only yesterday I saw a woman taking pictures of the hotels busy breakfast buffet and posting them when standing right beside the toaster where her toast was on the verge of ignition and then objected when another guest tried to get to it to stop the burning. Oh then she dumped the 4 slices of carbonised bread on the floor and kicked them under the table, replaced them with more bread to toast and returned to her table where she criticised him to her partner who sounded keen to sort him out.
When the second set started smoking a member of staff removed and disposed of them.

As an aside why do people insist of photographing every morsal of food?

Please tell me you mean the pair of fkwits.
:giggle:(y)

I have noticed (mostly abroad) around the toaster, folk put their bread in, then rather than stand to one side to allow the next one or two persons to put theirs in, they hog the toast input area so nobody else can get to it.
Simple minds, living in their own simple worlds, having total disregard for everyone else> ???

A bit like driving standards of the modern world.
There always was a small percentage of idiots. The driving test is the most difficult its ever been. Yet more % of people drive like damn lunatics and zero anticipation of a few cars lengths ahead/behind. Zombies! and now there are many fold more people driving than ever before. Result high potential for absolute carnage.
Nutters.

Modern life in every aspect?

I struggle to agree, 2 grandsons of that age, one has passed first time and having been a passenger with him the only question I have is: "How the f*** did he pass a test?" He has no lane position control, no idea about changing gear, brakes very late and hard, cannot reverse with any control, indicates to turn during the manouvre..........

The other has failed twice (at a different test centre) I'd say his driving similar but if anything slightly more confident.
In my opinion neither are ready to drive and shouldn't have been put in for a test.
