Like yourself, been round the block a few times, usually backwards, backpedalling.

I do not think the French will be too bothered:

    http://www.decanter.com/wine-news/champagne-exports-latest-figures-361501/

31,000,000 bottles sold in 2015 at a value of €440M is bout €14 a bottle, so the loss of 100,000 bottles sold by Weatherspoons will be about €1.4M. (£!M)
Although some of that will now be sold by other outlets.
Why go to Weatherspoons if you want champagne for your celebration?

That shortfall will easily be made up with new sales to North Korea.

Good graph that. Just shows you where the growth markets are, doesn't it.

The first one is disputed, or shows the difference in the cost of champagne in different countries.

However, another one shows that only about half goes for export:

I assume the French drink the rest.
From experience, Kir is the most favorite drink (made with champagne) for typical celebrations and as an apéritif.

As an after thought, Weatherspoons decision might leave the government with less tax revenue.

    Why indeed?

Spoons is often seen as a starting place for a drink in the evening, get a few in before moving onto somewhere better.

Its not top of many people list as a celebration destination.

I think it depends on the 'spoons.. due to the low prices, they are often frequented by the towns alcoholics queuing up for their first beer of the day at 8AM. But the new app, means you can sit in a booth and get table service. I have to agree with the earlier post that if you are going out for a few beers, why would you pay another 10-15 quid for a round of drinks?

As for French wine, personally I think its over rated (and vastly cheaper in France). America (the continent), South Africa and NZ all make better produce - I think the Italians did well to get prosecco to pass champagne. I personally prefer champagne, but don't care that much. These day's I'm happier with a Diet Coke.

    Correct.

Socialists play golf, ski, and enjoy much of the same things that capitalists do as well as drink fizzy wine.

    Funny old world innit.

No, but I saw a socialist having his car cleaned by one of those forecourt cleaning places the other day.
    Astonishing.
