a friend of mine has a problem in his house. in room 1 there is a ceiling rose with a 1 way switch. In room 2 there is a ceiling rose with a dimmer switch. when you use the dimmer switch in room 2 to make it brighter, the light in room 1 dims lower and vice verser. when the light is off in room 2 the light in room 1 is on but if you were to turn room 2 light on with the dimmer the light in room 1 will go off.

im thinking its a faulty dimmer switch as its quite noisy and looks like its seen better days.

any help would be great

thanks

There is no way a faulty dimmer on it's own could cause this problem.

Someone has been tampering with the wiring and probably put the two lights in series.

Have a look at the lighting circuits in the wiki and ensure both lights are wired properly.
Alternatively take some photos of the wiring above each light and behind each switch and post them here.

i just need to check that its def the switch wire connected right as whole house has dodgy electrics and the loft isnt accessable so cant get up there and look where the wires go to identify them

It could be anything, it might just be one problem or it might be more. It is difficult to say without seeing, the connections may be in the roses above the fittings.
If the wiring is dodgy then you may be better getting a quote from an electrician for a rewire anyway.

Take one of the lamps out - if they are in series the other will go out. If the other still works they are not in series.
