... what should we do with 'em?

I can honestly say i have never been out of an evening and had alcohol, and then driven anywhere.....

Those that do, get a meagre punishment, but shouldn't we make a public example of them and use indellible ink and write "drunk driver" on their forehead?

What is your stance on drivers who use a mobile (when mobile)?
i'm a liitle suspicious as to why MY opinion on that is being asked..... rhetoric maybe? but if it's a serious question (apologies), and similarly, i have never used my phone whilst driving !!! totally disrespective of other human life !!

My question is asked with no hidden agenda.

HM Gov would have us believe that drivers on a mobile are more of a danger than drunk drivers.

I don't drink and drive but I have on occasion answered my phone when driving (now got a hands free kit) do you consider the two crimes to be equal ?

I know people who say they no longer text when driving  JHC

What about drivers who take drugs ?

Drink driving is very topical at the moment but a guy who is half a pint over the limit is possibly less dangerous than a guy out of his head on crack texting his girlfriend when driving home.

Tiredness is also a cause of accidents, what tattoo would they get?

OK, i see what you're doing... devil's advocate and all that...I was talking drunkards who drive their car... should they have additional social ambarrassment type punishement? the aim was to show their friends and family just what they'll do.

As for drugs and texters.... well i despise both activiies becasue it just might be my kids in the car coming the other way !

zero tolerence !

Why dont police do targeted crackdowns?

For example, my local pub car park is always full (of cars) until 10pm.

Park a police car quarter of a mile up the road, any cars leaving the pub, that get as far as the stop point get pulled over.

Far too many do it habitually. Normally middle aged businessmen I reckon. Think they are immune to the effects of alcohol, and always have "liquid lunch" with other middle aged businessmen.

my local in new zealand had a similar problem. the cops used to sit and nab people coming out. for a while they would pay a guy to stay sober and pretend to be a tipsy as he got into his car, the cops would nab him while all the drunks would drive a different way. cops soon got wise of course and sent two or three cars instead.

There has been no mention so far in this thread of the dangers of SAT NAV. Brilliant development but drivers either watch them as opposed to the road, or worse still set them up for a new destination whilst driving.Surely this activity is as bad if not worse than the others.

They do operate like this especially at this time of year.

I got tugged one night after driving away from the pub (I was well under) and they gave the reason for stopping me as having "been observed leaving the pub"

A lot of drink drivers are repeat offenders. I knew of a guy who got a ban and then got caught driving, when drunk  , while still on his ban. He got a hefty fine and an extended ban, he then got caught driving after drinking from a lunchtime right through to the small hours of the morning, he decided in his infinite wisdom to try and outrun the police. He hit 6 parked cars before getting caught  The courts put him away for 18 months.

Tell me, why can a drunk girl cry rape because she was not "able to give consent", or shall we say fully responsible for her actions, but a drunk driver is legally accountable for what he does?

And to be fair, the punishments for drink driving are pretty harsh considering they punish you not for what you did, but what you might have done or go on to do.

Something like < 10% of road fatalities are caused by drink drivers. Ergo, > 90% aren't. Waste of money?
