Got a phone call from a friend of my cousins..
he's got some work in liverpool ( i live near birmingham.. ) that needs doing

block of flats..

each flat has a 4 way fuse board that needs changing and is fed from 25mm, 2 core armoured
work is to change the CU in the flats and replace a pendant in the bathroom for a 2D light fitting..
and test and inspect..

expects 3 flats done a day!!!!???

£200 a day but I got to find my own digs out of that so about £150 after digs & dinner..

said he's on "31 days" from the contractor and pays when he gets paid..
so no money for the first 5 weeks....

I'm not a fan of doing an against the clock job like that - it can force you into making the wrong judgement.
If remedial work is req'd, where do you stand?
Apart from that, how guarenteed is the money - there is a lot to lose should it go wrong.
How far are you willing to travel? Have you looked at the companies doing the work for the Olympics?

I've got 3 other irons in the fire at the moment so it's not a big deal..

2 panel wiring jobs that require a half dozen or so guys each, and a mates friends dad who needs 3 or 4 factory units re-wiring.. plus he's looking at buying 3 more..

I'm more comfortable doing industrial than domestic since that's what I do most of and haven't done any "real" testing since getting the qualifications ( the place I worked all we did was R1+R2 and insulation resistance on the units before they got sent out.. )

3 Flats a day?

Either its in a rough part of Liverpool, (yes we do have one or two! ), and he wants out quick or he wants quantity not quality!

I'd steer clear.

Does the board change include doing an EIC, or does someone follow you in and do this?

You could maybe manage 3 a day if everything goes right, and no testing, but experience says it wont all go right.

Sounds like it's already been inspected. Are there PIRs available? That could make quite a difference. Changing 3 4-way CUs in a day is no biggy. It may take a day for the first few - by the time you get to the end of the job you'll be doing 4 or 5. But that excludes any remedial work and unforeseen problems. If I were you I would ask for a price per CU and agree to do any remedial work seperately.

Small things, like missing grommets, unsleeved conductors, stripped plate screws etc. can take a good chunk out of your time, so make sure you're paid extra for this.

I've turned him down..

after tax it's £160 a day and I have to find my own digs and meals out of that.. so that's another 60 a day gone ( 45 for room and 15 for food / drink )

I'd have turned him down aswel, £200 & 3 flats a day thats taking the p***
I'd have wanted £200 per flat.

Coljack,
just curious, what district of Liverpool is it in?

Wise move by the way.
