Speed kills?

inappropriate speed is what kills. whether that is 30 mph (potentially fatal) or 130 mph. deceleration is the key.
 
Seems you're not reading the attached.. so it's bad driving technique rather than your proposed scientific reasons guys !!

Yep,, speed isn't the problem, ,,, The sudden deceleration to 0mph, following an accident is usually the cause of most fatalities. ;)

my thought are 90 miles an hour if you take an advanced course and pass with a car no more than 5 years old otherwise 70 mph
if the car is more than 5 years old or the driver is more than 50 then an annual [up to 90 mph] check up has to be passed]or the lower 70mph limit should apply

rural roads should be a max 50mph
built up areas without pedestrian separation should be 20 mph

culdesacks and areas like schools should be 15mph during daylight hours for 1/4 mile each side or for the last 1/2 mile on a no through road
 
The should bring in 'provisional licences' like they have in Oz.

For the first year you are restricted to 50mph and not allowed to drive on motorways.

All cars should be fitted with a device to stop phone signals operating within.

I see far too many youngsters now using SMARTPHONES!! I even saw one stupid B*tch with a Gorilla Grip (used usually for holding cameras) on her STEERING WHEEL holding her IPhone in place!!!!

The modern generation will be crashing more often because

1, They cannot concentrate long enough to actually manage what they are doing.

2.Smalltalk and tittle tattle has taken over uneccessary importance

3. Playing GranTurismo is no developer of actual seat of the pants real world driving skills.
 
What a pity they can't handle high impact.
 
I've got my own theory about speed and stopping distances. I understand that stopping distances are designed to enable you to stop your car safely if the car in front slams on the brakes, but I doubt if anyone ever adheres to these rules, particularly on motorways.

So...If two cars are travelling at 90mph with a gap of only two feet between them, and the front car slams on the brakes, the car behind will hit hit the other car at 90mph, so probably an impact speed of about 10mph, until they both come to a stop.

If the cars are travelling at 90mph with a gap of say thirty feet and the front car slams on the brakes, it will slow down quite a bit before the car behind hits it and probably the driver hasn't had enough time to react which means the impact speed would be much higher, maybe 50mph.

I'm not suggesting that we all leave a two foot gap between us and the car in front but think there must be point where stopping distances improve your chances the closer you get.

Anyone clever enough to work that out mathmatically to see if it's true?
