What about the tower being able to remotely release the lock on the door after a call from the locked out pilot?

But then how would the tower know that it was really the pilot and not a hijacker trying to gain entry to the cockpit?

someone who knows something about jet liners may well be able to answer this... but surely it can't be beyond software designers capabilities to engineer a solution whereby the plane can wrest control from a pilot if the flight parameters are clearly indicating a crash I.e descending at full speed to zero altitude?
What and make it even easier for the terrorists to down a plane?
Think about it.
 
All they have to do is enforce the two person rule for the cockpit.

How about using a GPS and not allowing a plane to deviate from its safe altitude and also override heading anywhere near any taller buildings. GPS could also stop a pilot from diverting a plane from deviating from its planned route as in the case of that Malaysian plane. Which means if all planes were fitted with GPS tracking and guidance, then hijacking a plane becomes very difficult to almost impossible, as hijackers would simply give up trying to hijack a plane knowing it cannot be diverted to another route or altitude by pilot alone. But if it becomes necessary due to bad weather, or some other problems when planes cannot land at a chosen airport e.g. due to an accident etc, only then inputs from the control tower in conjunction with GPS tracking can a plane be diverted to a different destinated airport, but never around any taller buildings or away from Airports.

How about just not having pilots anymore - fly the thing remotely from the ground?

(until the hackers gain access and send planes everywhere!)
 
Maybe we spend too much time thinking how we could stop the last kind of attack rather than think about how it might be done next time.

Isn't this locked door thing a result of preventing another 9/11, which just allowed for a new kind of way of hijacking a plane?
 
GPS signals can provide 3D information, but to be sure, if used in conjunction with altitude meter, the earth's terrain has been plotted or captured so many times over, so we know where there are hills and ,mountains and so on, as it has been mapped so many times, so we would be able to program GPS data along with terrain data, built up areas, any tall structures, or other sensitive nuclear facilities, any thing where a plane should not be close by, I am not sure how they would do this at London City Airport as it is only miles from the tallest building in Europe. Good job Borris rejected plans to double its capacity, this airport is far too near for comfort.

Now how does having two pilots at the cabin at all times still safe for passengers if one becomes a nutter, he could easily knock the other pilot out and take over the control, so they need other kind of safeguards and by having two pilots does still not guarantee safety.

Perhaps, planes should be put into auto-pilot mode in an emergency from ground control and landed by control tower using video from both plane and ground based cameras. The technology is there now so we might as well use it to override human element of unreliability.
 
GPS works via triangulation then assumes the earth is an ellipsoid.

Good idea, but what if the control tower staffer is a secret nutter just waiting for the chance!
