Personal information.

I just thought I'd let you all know that, since I retired, I am now living in Portugal.
Good for you! Does that mean that you have to be banished to that other forum?

I wonder ... are you allowed to live there by virtue of our membership of the EU. If so ....??!!

Kind Regards, John

Good for you, matey.

JW2: According to May, "others" will be allowed to continue living "here" as long as "we" can continue to live "there".

Not sure what you mean.

In theory, yes, but here there are time restrictions if you do not register as a resident - which I have.
Even then there is a requirement to be self-supporting if you do not have a job here.

Britain makes out the EU is consistent but it's not really like that.
There are schemes attracting foreign money to come here, not labour.

There is rather a lot of bureaucracy on the one hand but on the other, nobody seems too fussed.

Clue .... DIYnot has two 'Electrics' forums :-)

The serious point is that I trust/hope that the UK's 'exit' from the EU (something which you presumably didn't dream was going to happen when you left these shores) will not in any way jeopardise your position in Portugal. As you will be aware, the other way around, many non-UK EU folk who are living (and, in many/most cases, working) in UK are worried (one hopes unjustifiably) that they may be 'sent home' if/when we actually get out of the EU.

I therefore hope that your situation is totally secure and that you have a very long, happy and warm retirement there!

[ On a practical point, I wonder if your participating in this forum under a Portugese flag might not confuse some DIYers to whom you give advice about 'UK Electrics'?

Kind Regards, John

I know, but one only has to switch on the TV to see that there are many of those 'others' currently in the UK who are very concerned about their future here.

Given what has happened, I could understand the government taking a different attitude to EU people who have come to the UK since the referendum (and other EU countries might do likewise in relation to UK folk who have moved to other EU countries since the referendum), but only time will tell what happens about them.

Kind Regards, John

Since last December, but I didn't want to say anything until the paperwork was all finalised. :)
Let me see you are not lying, I am going to check your IP address, just give me a few seconds I am going to ask my helpful friend Googledoogle.

Clue .... DIYnot has two 'Electrics' forums :)
Oh, I see. Surely that relates to the subject not the replier's location. :)

Well, we've had posters from the US, other European and still have Irish. See how it goes.

It was only jest!

We have, but I do wonder whether some OPs might be less confident to accept advice about electrics in the UK, particularly that relating to regulatory matters, if the provider of that advise was flying an 'alien' flag! As for Irish (and even Welsh!), I doubt that many OPs realise the appreciable differences in regulations and/or practices.

As you say, you need to 'see how it goes' - although you'll never really know what is in the minds of OPs. Do I take it that one can only put in real countries (e.g. from a drop-don list) as one's location, rather than a 'free text' entry? If the latter were possible, one could put something like "retired from UK to Portugal" (or just "retired to Portugal").

Cheers, John

The flag is automatically displayed with your location. I thought I should edit my location.
I don't know if DIY is bothered where people actually live.

Does that not apply to the rest of Europe as well?
