Plans have been tabled to convert the NHS into a public/private enterprise, which critics say is based upon the US private health insurance-based system.

The only winners in this system are the private providers. This is beyond insane. This is a bad policy where even people with private insurance will lose out.

Nope. I am interested in good solid economic policies devoid of ideology. I've voted both labour and conservative. Our current economic policies from raiways to NHS to immigration have created increasing problems that need to be addressed.

The idea that a US style health system will be benefit the average person in the UK is pure myth.

In 1948 the NHS faced totally different challanges to the situation now. We have to look for different solutions and stop treating the NHS as a hot political potato.

The Tory tactic seems to be to run down the NHS to the point were they can claim a state system isn't efficient which will allow them to bring in the private sector.
This is already happening as more and more people are forced to go private, my neighbour paid £600 for a private consultant to find out what was causing his back problem his own doctor had told him he would have to go on a waiting list to see a specialist.
As a result of the private consultants report the neighbor is stumping up £1000's for a private operation as he can't stand the pain in his back, his local NHS hospital recently had a dispute with BUPA who had demanded that the hospital provide indemnity insurance to cover the private patients they been sending them,the hospital refused and BUPA stopped sending them patients, now my neighbour knows why his local NHS waiting is so long.

I'm inclined to agree. It would likely eliminate health tourism, which accounts for most of the NHS bottlenecks in London. They could start by refusing care to migrants that have not been citizens here for more than 10 years. Would stop second generation migrants shipping their in-laws over to this country with all their disgusting ailments. We don't want them here.
