Why is anything bigger than a 3-Gang socket a converter?

OK, so I will probably do what everybody else does have have a normal socket with an extension ... but, are there options bigger than these ....

that are not just converters, like these


Is it about how much one socket can handle or something? Ideally, behind my TV I should have at least 8 sockets (TV, bluray, set top box, xbox, nowtv, surround amp, stereo amp, record player - but a couple of spares might be sensible). I usually make do with a double connected to a couple of extension sockets, but it would be much neater to have fitted wall sockets.

I guess the only reason not to do this is if you decide you want to move your TV..... but I can't see that happening.

There's a number of reasons, but realistically, if you want 8 sockets, 4 twins is the best way to do it.

You'll notice that on both of those sockets one of the outlets is fused (maybe more than one on that nasty converta). That's hardly an ideal arrangement.

Partly - note that all 3 way and above items have a fuse in the front plate, limiting the total load to 13A.
The other reason is lack of demand - very few people would want a 6 or 8 way item permanently in the wall.

If the TV and whatever is to be placed on an item of furniture, the neater way is to get one of these: http://cpc.farnell.com/brennenstuhl/1951183100/extension-socket-8-way-black-3m/dp/PL14405
and fix it to the back of the cabinet / table or whatever, with a single lead to the wall outlet. The cables can then be kept tidy on the back of the cabinet rather than trailing all over the floor, and it's easy to unplug the whole lot with a single lead so it can be moved for cleaning or whatever.

However flat screen tvs are quite often fitted to a wall mouting. I can appreciate the need for several sockets local to the TV - I reckon I have TV, DVD, Stereo, Games console, WIFI, phone, firestick all at the same spot

As a variant of what flameport said, the business end of many multi-outlet extension leads can be attached to a wall just as easily as to the back of a bit of furniture - many have 'keyhole' slots for that very purpose.

doubles have a nice symmetry, anything bigger doesn't look great.

B-A-S- where's that faceplate from? I've used some of the BG 4 x 2g plates in my wiring scheme and got cursed at by the plasterer (and the bloke doing the boarding) for giving them nightmares- that little puppy would have solved many problems (and stlll can- the House of Pain is nowhere near finished)

I've had a few of their products. Some are better than others.

In particular the UK version of the "super solid line" seems to have a bit of a design flaw. The faceplates of the sockets are held to the main faceplate by a clip mechanism. I had a couple of said plates break off. Admittedly I don't think the breakage would have happened if I hadn't been abusing the extension lead by doing the Europlug/screwdriver trick but even so it's the only extension lead I have seen fail in that way.
