I was considering Intergas for a boiler replacement but I think I’ll have to give them a miss.

The most popular wall hung boiler sold in the USA for the last 5 years (?) is the Navien make ( South Korean) they are now in the UK market

Daikin are also in the boiler market now.

Another make I came across in the UK recently was Warmhaus (german made in Turkey afaik

Or you could fit a Wolf boiler. Rumoured to be heating the Kremlin ?? apparently designed by a lady ?? If they are heating the Kremlin they must be reliable ??? minus 30 in the winter and the boiler packs up Putin cops the hump ? and the Wolf rep could find a couple of Kremlin Heavies knocking on his door in the early hours ;)

So which one would you fit?

never come across or seen a Navien . But they do have a massive manufacturing base ?? fairly new players in the UK ???

A lot of boilers imported into the UK are specifically for the UK market ?

Viessmann founded in 1917 still family owned ? the founder was rumoured to have been responsible for or designed the Crematoriums (gas fired) used for holocaust body disposal ???

One of the biggest boiler manus for sales may well be ROC , Chinese manu , given the size of the Chinese market , (they are imported into the UK)

Most boilers share parts from the same parts manu's . Grundfoss or Wilo pumps, sit, Honeywell, siemans gas valves ect ect

Honeywell are probably responsible for more breakdowns than any other manufacturer ???????????

I have a 1982 Ideal Mexico...
Not very efficient but reliable.
Would you keep that?
If not, what would you replace it with?

So, I’m being advised to keep a 26 year old boilers and someone else is being advised to keep a 36 year old boiler. Just what is wrong with these modern efficient boilers?

Only reason I’m thinking of changing mine is because it’s making a noise. I suspect it’s the fan. Can someone listen to this noise and confirm my suspicions.
If it is the fan, is it a diy job or a gas safe engineer job? Is it worth fixing or is it time to scrap it?

I had a ferroli combi and had problem after problem... about 8 years ago and it was a pain in the ass, decided enough was enough and spent hours looking at reviews ,least problems after care and all other info I could find and my decision was a worcester bosch greenstar 28i and get it serviced every year and i am more than happy with it. I would highly recommend these to anybody wishing to renew their boiler

Probably nothing seriously wrong with the boiler, the problem is the way they are marketed to the general public.

Are they really that efficient ?

The figures in the adverts are for a boiler in a test situation and are seldom achieved in a real life domestic situation.

A bit like the claimed MPG figures that car manufacturers pump out that bear no relation to actual mpg figures achieved in the real world?

The sound emitted is like the boiler is "kettling"

I think I can make out the fan rotating but it does not sound unduly loud. All old fans make a bit of noise.

If I am correct about the kettling this would indicate the heat cast iron heat exchanger is scaled up.

In simple terms less heat goes into your heating and more goes out of the flue.

I can not remember the flue temperature of you make of boiler but probably around 250 degrees C. Some one will correct me if I am to far out.

Where as condensing boilers flue gas temperatures are considerably lower. Around 50/60 degrees C. So more heat is being extracted from each £1 of gas consumed.

Any modern boiler is going to consume less gas than your existing appliance.

If you buy a new boiler pick a manufacturer who offers a 5 years + warrantee, make sure the installation is registered with the manufacturer, make sure all paperwork is filled in and kept in a place you can find it, and have the appliance serviced annually.

Thanks. Thinking about it now, it only starts making that noise when it’s been running for a few minutes and warmed up plus I occasionally get air in the sealed system. Might be time to start looking for a new boiler!

Well, I've just had a reply from Worcester Bosch. Answers my enquiry very succinctly. I only sent the enquiry just over an hour ago. Now that’s what I call an efficient customer enquiry service. I’m sure they have their haters but I couldn’t have expected such a quick reply on a weekend. They're in the running for my business already.

"Thank you for your enquiry.

Based on the information provided the Potterton profile 60e boiler has an output of approx. 18kw and is a heat only boiler. From your description this has been converted to a sealed system. A modern equivalent would be the 18 RI regular boiler, this would allow you to continue to use the existing circulation pump (likely to have been sized to the property) and controls. This is a regular boiler that can be converted to a sealed system boiler.

For further information on this boiler please use the link below:

https://www.worcester-bosch.co.uk/products/boilers/directory/greenstar-ri-12kw-to-24kw

With regard to system boilers the equivalent would be the Greenstar 18I system boiler. Please note this will already contain a circulation pump (15/70 pump) as well as an expansion vessel and pressure relief valve and gauge. With this option you wouldn't need your current pump/expansion etc.

For further information on this boiler please use the link below:

Please note we will always advise boiler choice is confirmed by a qualified gas safe engineer who can visit site and discuss with you what you require.

A big old beast, & very reliable. The model replacing it depends on several factors, one being that it could be on a gravity system at that age.The disruption would be great, so i would wait until you had to do any major work to the house (usually a new kitchen/bathroom) I dont install, only repair, so anything easy to work on is good, Ideal Logics are good, Worcester are a pain to work on but very very reliable & their back up is good.
