Had bit of a bad day today. My wife went up Sainsbury’s to get the weekly food shop and as she was about to leave the car park, a kind passer-by tapped on her window and said that someone had just damaged the car with a shopping trolley. She got out and he pointed out the damage on the bumper and then pointed out the person who had done it on the other side of the car park. Anyway, she got back in the car and noticed that her handbag was now in a different position on the passenger seat, the passenger door was ajar and her purse was missing. Of course, the kind passer-by had disappeared too. She phoned me up in a flood of tears telling me to cancel her cards but within 5 or 6 minutes they had gone to the cash dispensers and our bank in the high street and taken £900 out of our bank account, £500 on a M&S credit card, £500 from our business account, £300 from a Post Office credit card and £330 on an American Express card. £2,530 in all. We'll get it all back eventually. There was probably about a hundred or so in cash in the purse but worse of all, and this is what has upset her the most, there was a £20 note in there that her Dad made her take for petrol when she was visiting him in hospital just before he passed away. She’s had it everywhere with her in every purse she’s ever had for the last 15 years. I hope those theiving Eastern European ****s have a long, lingering and painful death.

That's horrible. Sad to hear it. Do be patient when one of the tossers comes along shortly and says you're racist and it's all because of Brexit.

The bank reckons they watched her pay for the shopping, clocked the PIN number and specifically targeted her when she left the supermarket and got in her car. Like many others, all cards had the same PIN number. When I asked Barclays how they managed to withdraw £900 from our account, they told us they took £300 from the outside cash dispenser and a further 2 x £300 from the machines INSIDE the bank that have a higher payout but need 'extra' security (they said date of birth). We assume one of her store/loyalty cards had that on them.

They left her handbag and her iPhone. If she hadn’t had noticed the missing purse, no doubt at 00.01 tomorrow morning they would have taken a similar amount.

I must say, every single one of the banks/credit card companies have been superb and have told us they will refund the money stolen and the lady at Barclays has arranged for a bunch of flowers to be delivered to my wife.

That's terrible

How did they find out all five PINs within six minutes?

That was going to be my question. While this is really bad please say you don’t have the same PIN number on everyone of those cards?

Unfortunately, yep. I have the same PIN number on all my cards too. And the house alarm, work premises alarm, safes.... Perhaps its time for a review.

I trust you have contacted the supermarket to ensure they keep their cctv recordings.

They may well have evidence of them watching her use her cards, and targeting her in the car park.

Very unlucky that all the cards had the same pin numbers, and all your alarms too. Best go check on the safe too, can't be too careful.

She phoned the supermarket to let them know and they said they had a spate of the same thing a few months ago. It seems like they target a particular car park, get a few hits and move on to somewhere else. The supermarket asked what time and till she used so that they could pass on the cctv to the Police. The bank said they would also have cctv of them when they entered the bank and that too will be available for the Police if they require it.

Sorry about your wife's ordeal.

Write a wrong PIN on the back of each card. People might think you're stupid (if they see it) but it might confuse a thief.

On the bright side she's getting the money back and as the scum have been to so many places it will give the police more to act on.

My mum had her purse knicked out of the car boot in a similar way, actually in a Waitrose car park. The scum couldn't get her cards to work and so only got a change purse with a few coins and notes. Downside was the police were useless.

£2000+ is ALOT of money. Hope she gets over the shock, it might take a while but it will go. Try and be understanding and encourage her to avoid that shop and that car park for a while if you can. Downside though you might end up having to do the shopping :(((

its sad that such evil people exist and they should off course bear the full weight off justice
last year my friend called me neive because as he was a fireman installing smoke alarms and the tenets in social housing with a new tv must be benefits scroungers
i pointed out that most on benefits are hard working people with kids others may be on sickness benefit while others will be pensioners
i pointed out its perception
i would see a happy mum and daughter playing and laughing
his wife would see a young lass with beutifull braided hair and multicoulored dress
and he would see benefit scroungers
the point i am making all the same information but different interperitation
without all the facts it is no more than an assumption

How else are you supposed to remember? Folks now have to enter multiple PIN numbers and passwords on a daily basis. I defy anyone to memorise more than a couple especially those that are least used.

using a jammer
Crafty barstools!

The lesson here is that we pay the price of convenience. Crooks will always exploit weaknesses. I think my bank called it 'cloning' when they phoned me and alerted me to suspicious activity. They refunded the money in full.

We never caught the burglars that broke into our house though. Believed to be local heroin addicts.
