Banning gas boilers

The Powerwall is viable not only with solar panels, but also using cheap economy 7 overnight electricity to charge up.

As soon as the demand for over night electricity increases as a result of people charging their cars/powerwalls etc surely the price of the off peak electricity will increase?

Electricity stations must be more expensive to run (per KW) at night time given night time labour costs (I am guessing here). That said, IF, solar power were able to store more energy than household use and the use of storage batteries can transfer the excess capacity back to the grid then perhaps those with powerbanks in less sunny areas might continue to benefit from cheaper off peak electricity but then we have to factor in the fact that the amount of sunlight is seasonal. It might be the case that consumers are charged less for electricity during the summer months and more during winter, additionally there is the risk that the electricity producers will scale back on excess capacity (read: redundancy) and that we will have to live with power cuts.

Sorry I am not discounting the potential value of battery stored solar power but given that we no longer have a nationalised system, I am not convinced that it will work as I suspect that you imagine it will.

And we haven't factored in the increase in costs (economic or environmental) of extracting lithium for the batteries either. It may well have been one of the first elements created post big bang but it still needs to be mined/processed. Oh, and then we have to consider the need for cobalt- most of which is only viable from central Africa.

I worry that the likes of Tesla are simply selling us the modern equivalent of coal.

I thought that. One refinery in the UK uses the equivalent level of electricity of Leicester & Coventry to produce petro fuels. Remove that with cars charging directly to the electricity source, then we have enough power generation - and less pollution. National Grid stated so. Power stations pay companies at times to use electricity they produce too much, from wind, etc. It is slow and expensive to stop and start some power stations, so it is best they left on overnight. Some are small peak time stations (peakers), which are generally gas, which can be brought on immediately. There is one on the North Circular Road near Wembley.

There are also grid battery storage banks. Banks of batteries in Tesco like sheds that are used for peak use only, charged up at lower demand. The idea is to smooth out the peaks and troughs in demand.

Also the use of solar panels and Powerwalls will reduce the need for overnight electricity usage. I am repeating those who are expert in this.

It is controlled as one:

As of now the UK is using 40% renewables. Little coal is use for generation these days.

Sorry, I was editing my original post when you replied.

My bad.

I respect your enthusiasm but I remain pessimistic. It just feels like a case of history repeating- ie, people selling us the same package under a different name but increasing the initial outlay that consumers have to cough up. I hope I am wrong...

Life time of the battery, replacement cost ? Ownership or leased, cooling system failure ?

Lithium-Polymer Battery
Type Secondary
Capacity Varies depending on the battery; superior to standard lithium-ion.
Discharge Rate Flat
Recharge Life 300 – 400 cycles
Charging Temperature 32º F to 140º F (0º C to 60º C)

Battery & supercap technology is leaping ahead with battery prices dropping - as are solar panels. Lithium may be dropped.

"The moment of truth is getting close with launch on January 31st
On January 31, 2019, inventor and entrepreneur Andrea Rossi will hold an online presentation on the commercial launch of his heating device, the E-Cat. Thereby, the moment of truth is approaching for the carbon free, clean, abundant, cheap, and compact energy source that could potentially replace coal, oil, gas, and nuclear, and also solve the global climate crisis."

Now if we had a Socialist government, every council house would have solar panels, now.;)
Correct. But there are few council homes left. All government, inc forces, buildings could have solar panels fitted.

I remember a meeting at bg in 2008 telling us this would be law in 2010

Looks like phasing out will start in 10-15 years time.

Solar panels on the roof with a Tesla Powerwall battery means gas is not needed - all can be electric. Then we do not need to rely on the Ruskies for gas in the future.

Somehow, I don't feel the slightest bit worried about this, bearing in mind that the vast majority of our bloody politicians today can't tell the difference between their arses and their elbows.

....The heavy insulation means they do not need gas. Point of use electrical hot water appliances/taps have also come along making matters easier. Electric UFH is cheap, easy and takes up no space.
No matter how much or how little heating energy a house/flat requires, unless/until the price of electricity falls dramatically and/or the price of gas rises dramatically, it will remain the case that heating energy (no matter how little or how much is needed) will cost 2-3 times more with electricity than with gas.

Kind Regards, John
