Booking a holiday, where to start?

We "compromised"p:rolleyes: last year

We did a "compromise" a good few years ago. Took the Renault 19 on the ferry Newcastle to Bergen, up the Norwegian M1 including 2 ferry trips across gaps in the motorway and then a right turn into Finland for a week in a luxurious semi-detatched log cabin with private sauna near Yllas. Some distance north of the Artic circle it was possible to read a book at midnight by the light of the sun. Then back home via Sweden, across Norway spending a night in what had been the athlete's village at Lillehammer.

Far far better than the regimented package holidays.....

To be honest, having young boys, all inclusive in the standard places is easier ( which equals relaxation of sorts).
Somewhat selfishly though, I preferred last year's French escapade. No airport, no lugging cases, better food, no scratter families, wonderful scenery......

Don't get me wrong, we've done the holidays where we mingle with red tattooed chavvy Brits with ignorant children. However, it is true to say that you get what you pay for.

Some "package" holidays can be very educational and inspiring, a good guide can take you places that you would never find independently

Very true, but quite a few run of the mill packages just dump people in cramped rooms in second rate hotels with alcoholic company reps living on commission from the bars and rip off eating places

Maybe, not my experience, as noseall said, you get what you pay for

I wouldn't bother with All Inclusive if you have young children and the hotel has fixed meal times. Trying to get kids to eat when they're not hungry is a right pain.
Self Catering gives you more flexibility.

No "chips with everything, including breakfas ".
You ain't lived unless you've had chips for brekkie!

Went to Majorca in 1983 and was introduced to chips with mayo. Apparently a huge thing in the Netherlands!

Your experience of AI / your kids' meal habits is very different to mine.
AI breakfast is usually 7-10, lunch 12-3, evening meal 6-9 or half past. Plus daytime poolside snacks (toasted sandwiches, chips, burgers, pizza, etc).
Or, for a bit extra, you can go 24hr all inclusive.....
If your kids still can't be accommodated with that lot, train them!
