Vectra and I saw a Viva a couple of weeks back.

Viva is from the 60's to 1979/80. It was re-introduced a couple of years ago on one of their smaller cars.
The Cavalier became the Vectra in 1996. I didn't know they had re-introduced the Vectra.

I didn't go for the tensioner pulley on Ebay for £10, it was new but when I contacted him he said he has a reserve of £20 for it, for extra £8 I bought one from ebay brand new at £28. when I took it off the car it does not look misaligned as it did in the photo, it looked perfectly straight even when I had a better look at it while it was on the car.
The car starts fine but I notice after turning it off the belt has slipped partially off the crankshaft pulley

I noticed when I remove the drive belt it keeps getting jammed behind the tensioner pulley, how is that happening ? Also why does the belt look perfect and straight but when I start the engine for a few seconds and turn it off the belt has come away from the crankshaft pulley a little bit and looks wonky from above ? the rest of the belt stays in tact

I took off the tensioner pulley from the car, can you please tell me if this appears normal or at fault ?

Also please tell me if the alternator pulley appears okay. Alternator was only replaced about 16 - 18 months ago. the rattling noise seems to becoming from the bottom of driver belt area, not from above not near this pulley

You've posted that same post a number of times lol

Think these have a clutch pulley on the alternator, best to check that, these cause a rattling noise, they can also sound like a loose belt.

Is the belt coming off the pulley fully or is it just partially and staying there?

The only thing that has a bearing on the belt position is the alternator everything else is fixed.

From memory I think the alternators on these are fixed, but there is 3 or 4 types of alternators on these and some do fit slightly different depending on accessories.

Hi thanks for helping me out.
I don't know why multiquote is not working so I did each one individually
I am a diyer and this the first time ever replacing a drive belt, I have replaced many different car parts though mainly through watching YouTube. Also due ot corona virus I am pretty much alone doing this.

The belt is routed correctly around all the pulleys and looks straight from above, yet when I turn off the engine after a few seconds it looks wonky from the top and I can see the belt has come off the crankshaft pulley a little bit but is fine everywhere else on other pulleys. The alternator was replaced 18 months ago so as was it's pulley.

can you look at those 2 video's from above and tell me what you think of both pulleys in the video ?


I just ordered new drivebelt tensioner not sure if the old is bad though

what do you think about the alternator ?

Definitely seems to have play in the tensioner pulley with that 'clacking' noise it’s making so I’d change that. Re the alternator - can you feel the whole innards turning when turning it clockwise but just the pulley turns when you turn it anti-clockwise? Did you try moving the crank pulley with a bar like somebody else suggested?

The old tensioner was noisy, possibly the movement may have been to much but they have c3 grade bearings installed which mean they have excess play in them by design due to the speeds and heat they run at.

The alternator sounds a little noisey and might be the bearings on there way out.

Do you know what brand of alternator was fitted?

Another possibility is the crankshaft pulley. These have built in dampers, it's just a rubberised unit, if this goes soft or torn etc then you may see it have excessive movement which could cause the issue you have.
