COuld be ... about 40,000 died in the first wave, and it is thought that about 20% of the population have caught it. There are millions of people who have been in isolation. If everybody caught it, then potentially the first wave would have seen 200,000 deaths. But it would be in the population and with no, or limited, immunity, further waves would infect people again.
Spanish flu killed far more people in the 2nd wave.

the fear governments have is if they leave things alone, the numbers getting ill and dying might increase so much hospitals will be overwhelmed and then a need for an even harsher lockdown.
and its not the numbers that have dies, its the numbers that wouldve died, we dont know what that wouldve been.
