Has it been mentioned here that the UK has the best and most thorough genome sequencing processes and that's the reason why the new variant has been "detected" here back in September and that is why it has not been detected in all the other countries? We may not be able to claim the invention, unfortunately.
It's ironic that the same people moaning back in April that the UK was not doing enough testing to track and counter the virus, are now moaning about the results of too much testing.

The usual bunch are saying the variant was discovered in Brazil earlier in April and was imported to make the point it wasn't a UK virus.
The new variant has 17 mutations, of which one N501Y was discovered in September and is the one that they have most concern over.
However the Pfizer vaccine produce polyclononal antibodies so they can still bind to the mutated spike protein.

This virus is far more aggressive than any of the previous pandemics. One reason for this is that in previous pandemics some of the populations had some immunity after having been exposed to a similar but much weaker virus before the pandemic virus reached their country.
