Wetherspoons boss calls for more EU migration to tackle bar staff shortage

"Mr Martin said: “The UK has a low birth rate. A reasonably liberal immigration system controlled by those we have elected, as distinct from the EU system, would be a plus for the economy and the country".

I see nothing wrong with that. That was one of the reasons for leaving - so that we decide who immigrates to our country, not a collection of other countries.

Hands up anyone who takes political and economic advice from a pub landlord.

What an idiot.

I'm sure there are more than enough out of work people in the UK that can pull a pint, I mean how hard can it really be.

Not only that this guy treats his staff like poop probably another reason why he can't find staff. Didn't he sack them all instead of furloughing them?

He also decided not to pay suppliers for money owed for quite some time

He won't find any local staff before September when the furlough scheme ends.

Yeah horrible guy

Thought he was Australian ?
His father was marketing director for Guinness in Malaysia which meant moving to NZ but he was born in Norwich where his father was stationed in the RAF.
He was brought up mostly in N.I.
He spends his time visiting his pubs, he just turns up unannounced to check on them.
I saw him a couple of times, he just walks in to the pub by himself ,he doesn't even wear a suit.
I loved the look on the staffs faces when they realised who he was.

You could get burger, chips and a pint for £4.99.
What is horrible about that?.

His beer is so cheap the wino community don't need to sit on park benches with their carryouts any more.
They just head for the nearest Wetherspoon's for bit of shelter during the winter.

I'll raise a glass...

When Martin's 'empire' collapses!

He thought he'd make money from brexit and thus pushed for it...

Slowly but surely the lies are being revealed...

And why would an EU worker want to have to get a visa and come to a xenophobic/racist UK anyway?

Plenty of other more welcoming countries to choose from!

The problem appears to be an unexpected consequence of furlough. Plenty of people sitting at home being paid by the tax payer until September.

Many of those people may be out of work when the scheme ends. However, you can’t blame them for not feeling the need to get a job just yet.

You cant blame them for thinking that it would be utter lunacy to get a new job when that would make them immediately non-entitled to furlough payments in the future.
