3 Round Pin Socket

A mate of mine got a new garage fitted and he wanted a 32a socket fitted for his welder. Sent me a picture this morning that they didn’t fit a socket for the welder but they fitted this round pin socket instead apparently on the same 32a ring they installed.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what this socket is used for?

It’s used for connecting something that has that sort of plug!

Need to see the spec but I would guess that is suitable for no more than 15A.

A ring circuit is not suitable for a 32A load of any sort. Your mate needs a separate radial circuit rated at a minimum of 32amp with the correct socket for the welder.

PS the power feed to the garage will need to be substantial to support a welder too. Did your mate specify the welder requirement when he listed the requirements?

Are you sure it is actually on a ring? That would not be correct.

And, yes, it is a 15Amp socket, not a 32Amp.

Very weird that they fitted it. Do you think it was a qualified electrician?

That socket is widely used for stage lighting, but will I think fall into disuse now that LED lanterns are used.

Yes it’s on a ring. Got my mate to take the plate off and also the cover off the CU.

Mate showed them when they first came to inspect the job the 32a plug on his welder and stated he needed a separate feed for it.

Sparky is well known in the area and has a few teams of men on the road. Domestic and Commercial at a big scale.

He didn’t even fit the lights he wanted and it was the boss and 3 other men with him that came.

Tbh, I saw their work in numerous places and I was far from impressed.

They will just have to come back.

What do you think will replace it? LED lanterns still need power alibiet not as much.

5A trailing sockets seem to have become difficult or maybe impossible to find new. Last I looked I could find them used on eBay, but I can't even find any listed there now.

13A sockets mandate fused plugs (which are awkward if you have chains of leads and/or plugs in difficult to access locations) and are too tempting for the general public to plug into

IEC sockets and powercons are not available in a wall outlet form.

CEEFORMS are an option and do seem to be used quite widely but are a lot bulkier.

Lots of rigs still use hot 13a for DMX controlled led stuff.
And 15A for dimmed tungsten
It's possible to set 15A channels to undimmed via the packs but some people really get upset.
Otherwise it's Ceeforms.

Most IWB have boxes on them rather than wall sockets so could have anything that fits a 4" box
