Hopkins didn’t say much of anything. She severely harmed her defence by not actively defending herself. She tied her council’s hands and this is shown in the text.

Quite a few opportunities to defeat the claim existed but could not be explored due to the absent Hopkins.

I’ve skim read the summary and don’t see how/why she tweeted a seemingly random person who hadn’t been involved in the spat till then. And then refers to both in insulting terms when the error becomes apparent. I can understand how she might want to the take heat of a potential legal case without caving in which seems to be a newspaper tactic. Good for Munro for standing up to her.

The scope of the damage was amplified by the subsequent fight. Hopkins is not responsible for the amplification.

Had Hopkins offered an out of court settlement of a little less than the amount demanded, it’s unlikely that Munro would have been able to fund her claim, given the very real chance that she would not get costs.

The total bill was around £500k the damages were ~ 5%

The letter before action (sec 19) states that it is mistaken identity. Something she tries to leverage badly in her defence.

This is what Jack Monroe had to say before the trial:

This spat took place on 18 May. On 2 June, Hopkins sent a public Twitter message to Monroe saying: "I was confused about identity. I got it wrong."

Food blogger and anti-poverty campaigner Monroe did not appear to accept the correction was enough, saying: "15 days after accusing me of vandalising war graves & then prompting 577k followers to abuse me for entertainment… 'Confused' defence might have held water if we hadn't actually met, and she didn't have a history of seeking me out to direct barbed tweets… Eg she deadnamed me at the Ch5 Benefits debate – she did a LOT of digging. Hard to be confused about something you've researched that hard."
