was wanting to know the capacity and thought it would have it stamped on it somewhere - but the only makings I can find is 99db and my other bin is also rated at 99 decibels

what in gods name is that all about ?

i thought the bins where made in somewhere like germany or poland so db could be perhaps german bin ??

apparently EU directive, the max noise of an empty wheelie bin has to be known and stamped onto the bin - there must be people whose job it is to run up and down a cobbled street pulling an empty wheelie bin and someone else to asses the noise

the EU is more mad that you can quite imagine

then they allow cars to be fitted with idiotically loud crack and pop exhaust systems that make more noise than 10,000 wheelie bins pulled along a cobbled street at the same time

STOP PRESS - there may not be an illegally loud bin as the directive is there so as consumers can make a choice when purchasing a new bin
  • The EU Outdoor Noise Directive (2000/14/EC), which imposes maximum sound power levels on things like construction equipment and garden machinery, does not apply to wheelie bins. For bins it’s a case of declaration and labelling, not prohibition.
  • In practice:
    • Manufacturers must test and declare the rolling noise in accordance with EN 840.
    • Local authorities or waste contractors often use the published dB(A) levels when choosing bins, especially for night-time collections.
    • There isn’t a hard “legal maximum” that would make a bin unlawful to sell or use, only a guideline and disclosure requirement so buyers can pick quieter designs.

So: in Europe it’s not a statutory limit, more a standardised measurement and labelling scheme so customers can choose quieter bins if needed

Summary Table

Bin TypeTypical Max Noise Rating
2-wheel bin~89 dB
4-wheel bin~91 dB
High-end/manufacturerUp to 92 dB

But look at my bin - wow 99db
