It was "Something" along those lines as I remember it but may not be 100% accurate but you pretty much get the gist of my meaning hopefully.

As Mottie wrote, the exact combination of letters/numbers you mentioned is not possible. However, if one reduces it to "B4RRY", then DVLA says that it is 'not available' ....

... but I wonder whether it is perhaps 'not available' because someone has already 'bought' it, since if one goes to this website (click here) one finds (at a very silly price, echoing your comments ) ...

Actually it might have been that one he had or was thinking of having and at the price back then he reckoned it was a snip and thats why I made my comment Ok to sell on at a good profit but otherwise not.

Agreed (unless, as you say, it was bought as a financially-sensible 'investment').

However, I would not hold that against those who do it. Indeed, if I had "more money than I knew what to do with", I might well do the same ("why not?"!).

As I see it, i's really no different from buying designer products (particularly with the 'designer name' written all over them!), ridiculously fancy/expensive cars/whatever or 'real diamonds' that 99.9% of the population can't distinguish from impersonations, but which cost a fraction of the amount.

No I do not quite agree with you there John.

Without good reason, I think it is just Crass Vanity, humankind at its worst so to speak.
On top of that people stating "Ohh it spells my name" often it does not do that or anywhere near that.
We people of the North (us Norfs as we calls `em) tend, historically to be reasonably careful with how we spend, some are extremely so to an eye watering degree too.
I could tell you some tales about my late Father in Law and his take on some things, that was extreme and quite a laugh yet he was a product of his time, his generation too, just rather extreme.
Perhaps the Norf/Sarf divide has some bearing on it.
Anyway, if for sheer vanity then I do consider it strange indeed, there are a couple of multi-millionaires in my group of friends wo think pretty much as I do too.

Anyway, I think your topic was asking for help when comming up against officialdom and deciding the best route to be legal and correct with your car reg and , not unusually, you have come up against daft rules/laws . Not a surprise really I am afraid that it can be so. The Unthinking lurk in all places

I don't really disagree with that - but, more pragmatically, 'human nature' being what it is, the inescapable reality is that very many people (probably 'most people', to some extent) DO practice 'vanity' in all sorts of ways - one only has to look at the obscene amounts spent on 'cosmetics', 'beauty treatments' and expensive jewellery etc., or in the name of 'fashion' to see that ... and, as I've said, I'm not convinced that I would not become 'one of them' if I had unlimited amounts of money to spend!

That's a different matter, where we have more agreement. Other than using a zero to represent an "O" or a number "1" to represent a letter "I", I think it gets pretty silly when people use numbers to 'sort-of (but not very well)' represent letters of the alphabet. I am "JohnW" (actually "JohnRW") - so, if I were stinking rich, I might consider (if they were available) tings like "JW 1", "JRW 1", "John 1" etc. etc., but not anything more 'contrived that used numbers in the place of letters.

Indeed. As I've tried to explain, it doesn't really matter to me personally - if the rules/laws are as daft as I gave suggested they may be, I'd be happy to proceed just on the basis of common sense (and do any subsequent arguing 'in court', should silliness require that!).

However, more generally, I don't think it's unreasonable to discuss a situation which might mean that rules/laws are such that countless people could be 'on the wrong side of the law'without realising it, is it?

More practically, if the system is exactly as described by DVLA, then is seems possible that, throughout a period of a number of weeks following a request to remove a private plate, the police's ANPR cameras/system would flag the vehicle as untaxed (and possibly also without MOT and/or insurance), or even as bearing a 'non-existent' number plate - which, at the least, could result in 'hassle'

Exactly the kind of thing I do not like and more to the point the fact that some people consider paying good money for it. I really do despair!

Another thing that causes me some despair is that some people post replies that have no place on the forum but merely infantile remarks about some sensible logical questions or remarks.
Could we all endeour to keep the respect that should be shown to others rather than cheap childlike shots.
I certainly have nothing against humour but some posts more resemble a young child decide to take their bat and ball home.
Agree or disagree with anyone or everyone if you like but please keep it respectfull and logical

Well yes agreed, buy why? (unless, of course. they are trying to impress certain people and just by actually doing so might bring them additional benefits therefore might be a good idea. Nowt stranger than folk. Strange world innit?
I would have thought though that it might be more likely to unimpress more folk if you were to say to the world "I am daft enough to XYZ and it costs a silly amount of money!" Some might think it looks good but in reality it looks bad.
I reckon (hope) that when I look daft it is because I am deliberately aiming to look daft for a bit of humour. I`m all in favour of a bit of humour, it makes life more enjoyable (Ken Dodd was one of my heroes)
