Timber prices?

Reading this article on the BBC, I was reminded of this thread. Not one single mention of the 'B' word with reference to timber shortage which of course leads to higher prices. Anyone dispute this? Nosey? Ellie?

the BBC article references David Hopkins, Timber Trades Federation

here he is on a webinar 2nd Aug 2021:

On the panel were Josh Burbidge, managing director of Archwood Group and David Hopkins, managing director of the TTF.

Mr Hopkins explained how Brexit and the pandemic have combined to create a “perfect storm”.

Well it happens

nowt to be done about it

but I suppose it gives some thing for people to whinge about and so keeps there attention off this Chinese virus caper

So without Brexit, there'd be plenty of cheap timber on the market and Nosey would be a happy chappy. Is that what you are saying?

We'd still have a massive problem moving it around the country.
Brexit - what a pile of poo.

With no Brexit? Oh yeah I forgot. Covid causing lorry drivers to be off work. So, nothing to do with Brexit then. Ok.
Brexit - what a pile of excuse material for losers.

HGV driver shortages and some materials price increases are a product of Brexit.
Your focus on the price of timber will never detract from that. Exactly what this country could do without right now.

Brexit - what a pile of poo.

The Timber Trade Federation April 2021 Report states that timber imports were at a 13 year high in November 2020. It also stated that imports were 100,000m³ more in January 2021 than January 2020 - that's a 13% increase. The report puts timber supply issues squarely down to pandemic and demand and does not mention brexit. well it wouldn't when imports are up - not down.

Brexit was certainly mentioned in the May TTF market statement:

“Brexit-related factors are also affecting the ability of importers to import. Around 80% of the softwood used in Britain’s building, fit-out and refurbishment sectors comes in from countries in the European Union”

there was a big spike across industry then due to stockpiling.

I guess that info comes from here:

https://ttf.co.uk/timber-imports-up-by-12-in-january-2021/

Although it doesnt mention pandemic in regard to supply issues, only mentions pandemic in regard to pent up demand.
I guess you saw a different link

But there is no shortage of timber imports due to brexit. The report is clear that imports are up - not down.
thats a conflation -increase in timber imports for the month of Jan is not proof brexit hasnt been a factor in timber shortages and supply issues in the UK

there are comments included in TTJ statements that mention brexit is a definitely a factor.
so the article you talk about is not proof brexit is not an issue -it clearly is.

Brexit is causing significant supply chain issues in pretty much all industries and will continue to do so for some considerable time

Notch, stop it, now.

2 x 4.2 mtr lengths planed stoftwood, 25mm x 38mm, £49.03 plus vat, **** me. This was in Jewsons the other day, sheet of 18mm plywood £45.66 + vat.

What worries me is that when the shortage is over and shipping costs fall back to pre covid levels, the prices will stay at this level.
I'm currently putting disclaimers on quotes that materials prices are subject to fluctuation - upwards.
