    External Maxtor storage device

I assume you are using some form of backup programme and maybe compression. I've tried these methods and always found some problem or other. All I do now is a straight copy of the "My Documents" folder on to an external hard disc. You can then see what you have and then easily extract any...

Just like to say thank you for all the replies. Will be off tomorrow to buy new. Don't think I can get away with them being a present for the wife. Thanks again.

    Garage Lighting

I have 4, four foot fluorescent units in my garage which have been installed for at least 30 years. Obviously over that time I have changed bulbs and starters. Recently, after the cold weather set in, two of them stopped working and then the other two stopped as well. I tried new tubes...

    Sliding doors on a bath

The bathroom is quite small but there is about 8 inches between the end of the bath and the wall which I will utilise as storage space. We don't require a lot of space, just for things like cleaning stuff, spare loo rolls, shampoo, soap etc. Opening doors could be a solution but the basin...

    Sliding doors on a bath

We have just had a new bathroom suite fitted and my wife wants to utilise the space under the bath at either end. What springs to mind is two sliding doors. Any thoughts on what is available to use for the sliding doors to sit in, top and bottom. The simplest form I suppose is an "E" shape...

    SPOTLIGHT BULB

I've recently purchased a small light box cube for use in taking pictures of small objects. The kit came with two spotlights with a label saying: Replace with 50W MAX double envelope tungston halogen bulb that is marked on the lamp carton as being suitable for use without an additional...

Ripping CD music with Windows Media Player

I have been using Windows Media Player a lot lately, to back up my CD collection to an external hard disc. When I have multi CD's with the same overall title, WMP just rips them with the main title and then disc 1, disc two suffix etc. So for me there has not been a problem. Does this...

    Grit for my flat roof

Wind and rain removed some of the white grit on my flat roof and I would like to replace it. What do I ask for (other than roofing grit) and where would I purchase it? Wicks?

    which external harddrive?

The price of external hard drives appears to be dropping all the time. At the moment the Seagate Free Agent range is good value - I bought the 320GB version before Xmas from Maplin. I also use another Seagate external drive drive (one with an integral mains switch) as well as a Western...

    Laptop: Dell vs Acer?

Forget Acer and Dell, I'd go for a Sony - very stylish - good value. Generally has an Intel processer and a separate graphics card.

Flashing in an energy saving bulb

After I posted the above the "similar topics" came up and I found a really good thread from Dec 2006 that gave me all the answers.

Flashing in an energy saving bulb

I recently fitted a Philips 11 watt (60W) Energy Saver lightbulb. However when it is switched off one of the three glass loops which comprise the element part, flashes on and off around once a second. I've checked my other energy saver bulbs and this effect is not present. Can I assume I...

    Paint Filled Roller

I caught a programme on SKY advertising a paint roller that had an internal sealed compartment where one poured in the paint (about a litre) sealed the end and off we go.. The chap doing the demo spoke about the paint may need thinning in order to get the flow rate right and that a...

New wallpaper over a vinyl wallpaper

I am repapering the lounge which currently has a vinyl paper on the walls. With two of the wall the top layer of the vinyl paper pulls away very well in one long strip, leaving a good base layer to work with. However on one wall the vinyl does not seem to want to separate from the base layer...

    Earthing and Plastic Pipes

What are the latest rules on earthing taps etc when using plastic pipes please? If say the bathroom taps are connected via plastic pipes, do the taps have to be earthed and if so where should the earth wire be taken back to?

Flushing out the central heating system

Am I correct in assuming that if I have a new gas boiler fitted, it's mandatary that the installer flushes out the system before fitting the boiler? On a system around 15 years old what's the chance of the radiators spring leaks after all the sludge has gone?

Basic CAD software for building plans- any recommendations?

I know it sounds obvious but have "googled" for free CAD software. For what you want to do there will be a few packages around. If you want layers, with electrics, plumbing etc each on their own layer then that's a bit more complex. I use AutoCad but there is a cost to that.
