a girl in need of a guys advice

Me and my partner want to get our bathroom done, but i'm not sure the best way to go about it, as money is ( as it is for anyone) a factor in it all.
i have had a few companies come round and give a few quotes for supply and fit and just fitting, which we are waiting for in the post. my problem is my partner works away, and even if he was here, he is completely clueless about diy where as i do most of it in the house, but this isn't just a case of plumbin in the washin machine, if only it were that simple hey!!

i'm worried about bein taken for a ride as my guy isn't around to sort all this out, and even though there are plenty of companies out there that will fairly price to a woman, there are those that see dollar signs. grr!!

so guys, my question is,do i go through a company who will supply aswell? do i get the suite and what is needed myself?
but i really really want to know if i should go through one company to fit or do i get quotes from tilers, plasterers, plumbers ect...???
what is the cheapest option? i'm thinkin the one company, but if you guys might be able to advise me of a few things to look out for,that would be really great.

A local plumber should be able to offer what you need, someone like dolphin will charge you a fourtune.

a lot of plumbers offer a lower charge on straight swap bathrooms, so if it's going where all the previous stuff was then this will also save you some money and can be done within the day.

I find it's best that the customer buys the stuff they want, that way if they don't like it and it's been fitted then it's tough it was your choice

but if you want a plumber to supply and fit then just be specific about what you want, and try not to think every plumber is out to rip you off, it's only a few that do that and you can usually tell by the complete over estimation

First: See if you can get recommendations from friends/ neighbours/ family. Then get a few different firms in to quote anyway.

Second: Know what you want and write it down. Its going to be your bathroom not the plumbers but be prepared to listen to advice they give you because they know what they are talking about, but see if they all give similar advice (to root out liars) Tear pictures out of catalogues/brochures if you see something you like because a picture speaks a thousand words (and helps if you don't know the name of something)

Third: When discussing price, ask for the best price and then politely ask for a better price (watch BBC's "Don't get done get Dom" for tips). get quote's written down with a list of agreed work. Don't always go for the cheapest - people who can afford to do jobs at rock-bottom prices need the work (which means they aren't very busy - good plumbers are usually busy, bad ones are usually desperate for work).

i have looked into it a bit on the net, and have found out the pro's and con's. my original tiles r very solid, and out of the 5 people i've had look at the bathroom so far, they have all said it looks very good and they wouldn't have a problem with it. i did get one guy who worked for one of the bigger firms, and was a complete salesman. i might be a female, but not a f~*!@ing idiot ha ha. surely if there are products out there specifically for this, surely its fine, if it is done and prep'd properly that is???

No problem with tiling onto existing tiles as long as they're sound,and as you've said they are,then....happy days

Yep, I have just finnished (well just a few to go) tiling on tiles, no probs looks bl00dy smart. Anyone considering doing it, do it, as long as the originals are secure youll have no probs.

it's just the setting time that takes longer, about 72 hours i think, before your supposed to grout.

ask in the tiling forum for any little tips, as mentioned as long as the previous tiles are sound then it should be ok, just go around and tap the tiles if they sound hollow, take them off scrape off the old adheasive and put them back on the wall with an even spread of adheasive.

Tiling onto a flat level smooth and sound surface, nah I would rather hack it all off and be left with the surface of the moon lol.
