Is not the "highest authority in the land" the "people" who elected the parliament.
We are actually a representative democracy...

Every now and again we get lent a pencil and asked to put a cross in a box.

After that we are in the hands of our 'representatives' as to how we are governed.

And our 'representatives' can change the rules at any time.

The only thing that prevents the abuse of power is as has been shown the rule of law.

But then again, our 'representatives' could always legislate to change that ability should they wish to do so!
