Really enjoyed my bricklaying on this one - not...
Not bad. You're slowly getting there.
If you look at the first and second images above you can see the bricks I used to weight the tops of the headers to prevent them from tipping forwards. Bloody pain!

You’re worrying me now, because I did a soldier course (albeit a short one) and used a line like normal and nothing tried to tip forwards. That was on one of the black catnics with a flat edge at the front. However later when I used a different lintel with a downward sloping front lip, I had a mare with bricks wanting to tip forwards and it wasn’t even a soldier course
Don't forget the cavity tray and weep vents. The WV's and tray just makes it that much harder to do.

Ok idea but I would not recommend doing this on green brickwork.
Quite right. I have done it when laying Staffs on a soldier. Sometimes better to strut 2 bits of 2x2's to the jambs to support the batten.

Do I still use the plasticiser with it?
It'll probably say on the bottle whether it's a plasticiser too. Covering it up is a good call - amazing how as low tech as a blanket can be sufficient to keep just enough warmth in the materials to stop the mortar freezing as the temp drops below 0. If it's sustained, it won't help, of course.. Paying 20p an hour to run a fan heater might be possible in the right conditions too (probably not this case tho), though generally a close eye on the weather forecast and not laying when low night temps are forecast is the easiest solution.
windfinder.com has some pretty good localised weather reports and forecasts. Beware: don't go to windfinder.co.uk - one of those "let's find a popular .com and buy the .co.uk version then load it up with viruses" **** sites
