Teams with current sustained success invite begrudgery.

Liverpool had to deal with this when they were winning league titles and European Cups. Part of the disgraceful comments directed at fans and the club after the tragic events involving them were from resentment at their success

Man U are dealing with this now because they have won more PL than anyone else. That's the reason, in simple terms.

Also it is different now because in Liverpool's heyday, other teams were in with a shout of the title - but today we have had only 3 winners of the PL.

So the begrudgery is concentrated on fewer clubs.

Also a long term manager gathers up more gaffes and quotes over time about other teams etc, so fans remember this.

If Liverpool win 3 or 4 titles, then you willl see football fans begrudgery turn on Liverpool. It's a back handed compliment, and you'll have to take it as such when it happens - big number of fans don't really moan about unsuccessful teams.

It's a fair point but not quite accurate; Man U, Blackburn, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City=5 PL league title winning clubs. But that's being picky.
My main disagreement would be that Man United were hated when they were shyt as well as when they were successful. They are simply the most hated team regardless of success and judging by comments made by so called followers, it is not that difficult to understand why!

Have you read yesterdays news about United's finances?

Manchester United are bracing themselves for a new supporter backlash after their latest accounts revealed they lost £71million to financial obligations imposed by owners the Glazers over the last nine months.

Put in simple terms, the money lost as United try to service debt levels that still stand at more than £420m is equivalent to £250,000 a day.

While United's accounts say gross debt has dropped by £61.2m from £484.5m to £423.3m - a 12.6 per cent reduction - this is countered by the club's cash reserves falling from £113m to £25.6m, a reduction of £87.4m.
In short, this means United are £26m worse off than 12 months ago.

Wasn't counting City at the time as they were not part of the equation in my context of looking back over the PL.We will probably see the same resentment to them that Chelsea have had , due to their wealth as much as success - even though a lot of fans would love that same access to money for their own club.


I don't recall ManUtd being universally hated in 70's 80's when they won the odd cup but no league. Obviously there were rivalries with Liverpool/Leeds/City but the ABU thing cam in with the PL as I recall. I do recall a lot of resentment/jealousy over Liverpool for other fans.

Regardless, think that spreading out the spoils dilutes the envy.Also long term managers gather resentment too.

Football culture is to a large degree based on 'hate' of varying degrees. Many fans can only define themselves by who they 'hate' rather than just being proud of thow they are. Sad, but there you go.

I have followed football since I was a wee boy and been to many games in those years. Home, away, friendlies and testies.
During those years Man Utd have been poor, very good and mediocre.
When going to watch the international games, you find out what other fans are thinking and believe me Man Utd were/are more hated than the police, estate agents and bankers! I have never known it be any different.
