DeWalt drill woes

As above, nothing to lose....but as you say you have smelt burning, this is a sure sign of insulation failing - especially if the drill won't spin as fast as you thought it could.

Sounds like the winding are fooked. New drill me thinks.
 
You do have access to compressed air - your local petrol station.
I work at one and the only attachment is the inflating one and it's controlled by a daft computer which will only blow air against resistance ie a semi inflated tyre. The inflating nozzle won't blow air into air at pressure.

Progress eh? To be fair, I last used one about 30 years ago when they were free.

A good suck with the vacuum cleaner might help get some of the muck out.
