Well it wasn't just the miners. She also managed to shut down the stinking steel works, the filthy docks, the lazy and polluting car industry in fact all our filthy dirty polluting industry, she also managed to destroy my career. Lovely woman.

she made air pollution worse as the industries supplied with coal where still supplied but with far more carbon miles as it was now from a different continent rather than a different town or county
she was fully responsible for conquering and defeating the coal steel and car industry rather than taming investing and modernizing them

Harold Wilson closed 253 pits Margaret Thatcher closed 115

havent got a clue on actual number but you you need the full stories
theres a fair chance the numbers off people and volume off coal mined will tell the whole story
as in a few small pits closed will have far more cost per person so far more uneconomic than a superpit with thousands working in it closed by dogma rather than the value to society in general

Coal was dying anyway.

Shipbuilding could not compete with the far east

Red Robbo (who died a few weeks back) had much more to do with destroying the UK car industry.

Generally, the UK manufacturing industries have been in decline since the 50's, whilst other far east/third world countries have been in ascent. We did not manage the effects of the diminishing Empire very well.

Did Margaret Thatcher negotiate biggest EU rebate?

Arthur Skargill was the person that caused the greatest damage to mining.........

whilst i agree red robbo was far to milletant
it was as much inept management and lack off communication and dialouge that allowed it to get out off control
it should be a team with all inclusive rather than us and them

It was done on purpose by 'them'.

i have never ever enjoyed militant or dogma
every situation can be resolved by communication respect an understanding
evolution will always be easier than revolution with natural change being more productive than dogma driven change

Thinking about the car industry then and now -

perhaps the country would be in a better state if the Government was run by the Japanese.

you cannot blame unions or management in isolation
its lack off communication or negotiation with the evil hand off the masters
in the same way the puppeteers of the governmet control southern rail with a no loose contract where the government take full losses with any disruption between southern rail and the unions paid for fully by the government
if this is not a overly heavy stance in a supposidly neutral situation what is ??
