Energy Bills

how can companies qute above the price cap ? I have a friend who is being quoted 11.5 for gas and 37 for electric from next week, can they ignore the price cap?

Can they ignore the price cap when quoting - I suppose they can, but I don't see how they can ignore the cap when it comes to the actual charge/bill.

I understand that the cap only applies to variable tariffs, that it doesn't apply to a fixed one.

the price cap does not apply to new contracts only present contracts hence the "DO NOTHING"mantra to keep the cap

I see that OFGEM are planning to introduce surge pricing for smart meter users.

That will rely on lots of customers having Smart Meters which actually work as Smart Meters, in the rush to install many were not able to be used Smart once you changed supplier. I am in that situation and despite pestering each subsequent supplier to sort my meters, they have been incompatible for several years. It seems the rush to Smart Meters was just that - once a Smart Meter was in, that was all that mattered.

Yeah, I only posted as woody mentioned different charge rates but hadn't included a link :)

Unimpressed (that my polite thoughts).
I can see my bills going up if I am forced into having a SM as wife will not leave anything electrical on overnight. Dish washer and washing machine both have delayed start - she just will not use them. I sure she would switch the consumer unit off if she could at bedtime. She is afraid of fire and has seen an immersion heater cable cause a fire. We have smoke alarms over the immersion heater, in the utility area of the house, in the kitchen as well as lounge, the landing and room over the kitchen.

The plan by OFGEM is contrary to other Government guidance, including that in the new Building Safety Act and other fire safety principles in which it is recommended not to run appliances unattended or at night when fires may go unnoticed while occupants sleep.

IIRC back in the day when smart meters were announced, this type of instant change to unit costs was raised as a concern but Government and energy companies said that it would never happen.

Are they linked? A distant alarm would not be heard here, we have linked, so one triggering causes all to sound. They can be even better than your nose at detecting smoke.

Yes. Cabled in when refurbishing; battery backed mains powered.

Thanks!

Long ago, my parents bought a used static on a park for a sort of weekend retreat. They hadn't properly read the terms and conditions, because after just a couple of years it became too old and they were forced to either sell it to the site owners (at a massive discount), or move it off the site and find somewhere else for it. They couldn't find anywhere else, so had to sell to the site owner for a song. Not sure that can happen today.
It does.

Someone I know had to buy a new one after theirs got too old. Had to buy from the site owners too. And they charged to transport it on the site too ...... Their site closes at certain times of the year too. And they can't use bleach as it messes up the site's drainage system. You have to buy gas from them and if you need a handyman, you can't just being someone in from outside the site. They have to be supplied by the site (nod nod wink wink, backhanders all round).

It is sodding outrageous!

The biggest greening improvement at one time not that long ago was LED lighting.

Becauuse the LED lights are cheaper to run people seem to have more of them. Defeats the object. My brother replaced his 6 halogens in small lounge ceiling with 20 LED downlights. Some people's houses around here are lit up like Blackpool illuminations inside and out all night.
