Fiesta exhaust

My backbox is hanging off. I've tied it up. A friend (girlfriends dad) reckons the whole lot will need replacing, the whole exhaust. Luckily he knows a man that can. Its a 53 reg diesel ford fiesta. Its currently making a horrid low whirring noise. Expert opinions?
