Gas Monkey Business

Countless companies actually.

eg?

boiler manufacturers, eon. . . .

A free telegan? wow! That's like giving a mechanic a free spanner that they can only use at work in the garage they work for. (great perk)

lol even I can count them but do the manufacturers run apprenticeships and general ccn1 + 5 acs courses? (I don't know). I'm sure eon are cushty at the moment as they try to build a reputation and erode the bg customer base but seeing as they are copying the business model of bg and even using old bg training centres with the same staff within 12 months there will be no difference between bg and eon.

Guy in hrpc got his fga back from calibration the other day with a 460 quid price tag on it......would have paid for my holiday!

I think the whole industry has changed for the worst over the last 20 yrs but that's life I suppose. If I was looking for work BG would be bottom of the list that's all I'm saying. (I could get my job back there tomorow If I wanted)

dangermouse46 by the sounds of it ya dint like it at bg?

but even you have to admit they supply ya with the tools, equipment and facilities to learn and do your job. the main reason i would advised the sfl route is because he said that he didn't feel competent to go straight in to repairs, this way he'd get to see the boiler and systems without any pressure to repair the faults and wen he feels ready have the opportunity to move up a level and start carrying out repairs with some basic training.

as far as selling is concerned, obviously they want ya too but ya don't have too! they are going to try and make a profit what ya think they are going to do? fit and repair boilers out the kindness of there heart?

Dangermouse . Can i ask if you are that good and confident in your abilities WHY are you not working for yourself instead of one of the lesser manufacturers with the travelling involved
Surely someone of your ability and experience (a whole ten years out of a pretend apprenticship) could earn more than 40k a year.
I know what i earn for a 3 and 1/2 day week you would be a millionaire in no time .

I plan on starting out on my own in the next few years but the pension, holiday, sick pay, bonuses, guaranteed work and easy money are hard to give up. I'm gonna wait for the economy to pick up first.

Surely someone of your ability

How do you know my ability/knowledge/skill level? Experience is a subjective thing, people learn in different ways and at different rates. Age is not a barometer of technical ability.

Why wait if your good enough you will get business in any economic climate without the need to advertise.
Ball park about a grand for tuesday, wed, thurs most jobs take 2and a half to 3 days with monday afternoon after weekend hangover used for doing bits and bobs that can quite easily end up at a couple of hundred quid,
And as everyone knows fridays are for golf . is that not what everybody does

And my biggest reason for working for myself is the amount of time off i can have and nobody tellling you what to do.

Fair play, that does sound good. I'll be working towards that and have to start making serious plans over the next year but I'm currently applying for a visa to gain residency in Australia. . . .

Have a look at brisbane there equivalent of the council are meant to be taking on gas engineers and are pay quite a wac of the application fees and there equivalent of corgi exams so you can work straight away.

thanks for the info- i'll have a look. I was considering adelaide before, using concept australia down brackmills.

Had one mate who has used a visa agency and it has cost him and family around a couple of grand so far another mate done it off his own back and he reckoned less than a grand.
But they are crying out for gas engineers

I'm also learning solar and air con thru the firm i work for which will hopefully come in handy.

there are also vacancies from time to time at Scottish and Southern, which is a pretty good company and operates in various regions under brand names of their Electricity companies but does gas boilers too.

AFAICT they are mostly trying to poach experienced BG guys though

You can register on their website and it will email you if something matching comes up

http://www.scottish-southern.co.uk/SSEinternet/PowerfulOpportunities/Public/CurrentVacancies.aspx

one of the ads says "The work will include servicing, maintenance and repair work of part systems and full central heating. Minimum qualifications of CCN1, CEN1 are required." in areas BN, HP, PO, RG, SL, SO

They also take on a batch of apprentices once a year (electrical) and these vacancies are very much sought-after

JohnD although it says southern in its title i don`t think they cover Aus which is what dangermouse is after
