Big Tone hit a nail on the head for me.
"The land cannot sustain that number of people", to paraphrase. Not without capital investment and continual funds being pumped in.
On one hand, a guy leads a nomadic existence, driving his small herd of livestock with his family from watering hole to watering hole, a way of life that has gone on for thousands of years. Yet western governments want to pour billions into such a country, to put that man and his family in a city. And that's "good" - he can have a tv, mobile phone, and Coca Cola. Yet his "way of life" is gone.
On the other side of the world, a panda sits in a zoo - fed, watered, cossetted, helped in every conceivable (!) way to further it's species. To many, that's "bad" - "give them back their way of life - what we're doing to them is not natural!", some cry.
For me, stop destroying the panda's habitat, them leave them alone - if they all die out, who were we to declare ourselves God anyway?
My boss said this morning he won't give to charities anymore, when the "Horn of Africa" drought. He can have a valid opinion on this, in my eyes - he's done the "finding himself" phase, which for him was repeated stays in Africa, doing voluntary work on all manner of projects.
He has seen that the corruption is so rife, that anything you do, short of physically spooning the food down the child's throat, is almost certain to end up in someone else's pocket, belly, or house. Like the washing machine for the orphans' centre, that a staff member took for themself. I could go on.
I often hear the phrase "respect for your elders", and indeed Africa is held up as a model of that doctrine, compared to the "feral" youth society we are supposed to be blighted by. But this can also manifest itself as "the elders do what the f### they want, take what they want.....", which my boss has seen happen, frequently and repeatedly, during his volunteering.
I truly feel sorry for the kids, I really do, but one has to ask, for countries that have had so many people starving and dying for so long, despite the billions having been poured into them, how can they not feed their people, yet can bomb the bejesus out of each other for decades?
