The lights in my apartment are operated by a key card light switch near the entrance. This is similar to what you find in hotels. It has stopped working. How can I get it working again? The lights won't come on without it, as far as I know.

Apparently, the key card type are often able to be activated just by sticking a random piece of card into the slot?
