Searched for this but couldn't find my example on the forum, so here goes.

External meter cupboard as required by EDF, has a service head supplied by EDF, meter, tails and Isolator installed by Siemens under contract from E.ON.

I want to fit a Generator Transfer Switch to the board, tried all day to get a definative answer from all interested parties to no avail. (DNO verbally say OK but will not write confirming it, conversley they did't say no)

So, can I affix this switch to the board or am I in breach of something and if so, what?

Cheers

I think that the DNO own the board and can get a little arsey about customers installing their own equipment on it.

Maybe the DNO person you spoke to wasn't that bothered personally but wasn't happy enough to put it in writing in case it came back to bite them.

Bongos,

Thanks for the reply, DNO (EDF Technical Line) did not contest ownership of the meter cupboard and board (its mine), he said they were only responsible for the service head.

Looking for some solid evidence if it exists one way or the other

Will there be room in there? I don't think any of the generator changeover switches I have installed would fit in a meter cabinet along side the cutout and meter.

Even so, it'll be reasonably large, including its enclosure, surely, as it'll have to be rated at 80 or 100A. Where are you going to put the inlet you'll be plugging the generator into?

Nor will be cheap.

And you've only got a 2.2kVA generator, so what is the point of switching the whole house over to it?

Hi BAS

The switch is rated at 125A, it is not insubstansial, but will fit, the intake will be an IP rated interlocking socket inlet mounted outside of the meter cupboard.

The generator will only be used to power lighting and heating with the design and procurement 90% completed.

Control of loads will be by procedure rather than a seperate dis brd.

Do they own the cutout and meter as well? If you own the 'cupboard' then I wold say you could install what you like in there (after the meter . . .).

Thanks for your best wishes and link, (I'm aware of Part P and the process to follow, but cheers anyway)

Skenk

EON own the meter, tails and Isolator, EDF the service head (Cut out)

I agree that I should be able to do it, I looking for a solid reason why I can't based on other forum users experiance that can be substanciated.

I can't substantiate my claim - only that i'd read about some DNO's being against it.

From what I understand is that you DNO require the board to be a certain size for their equipment.... cut out & meter

and possibly a check meter if ones ever needed in the future[/b]

In my understanding..........
The DNO own the board (Ours usually say Manweb Equipment only to be fitted to this board) but the box belongs to the customer.

The DNO sometimes get arsy when you fit stuff on their board because if we come to fit a different metering setup there may not be enough room.

Some sparks around here buy their own box (www.meterboxes.co.uk) and mount it next to the DNO box and install their equipment into there.

Roo,

Jackpot !!

Great idea, saves all the risk, will hunt the slimline version tomorrow.

Cheers
