National Grid capped off supply to old lady.

Tony,

Your not advising that an engineer 'fiddle' with an appliance he / she is not competent with?

That comment should be removed by a mad mod.

Thats as bad as advising someone on how to change a solenoid (without having to break any gas joints)
:x

Firstly, the valve controlling the pilots is available to the user after lifting up the top tray, again a user function for cleaning.

Secondly, the NG engineer is qualified and equipped to check for gas leaks after touching anything.

Tony

He/she is qualified to LOOK for gas leaks, is NOT obliged to fix them no matter how simple.
In fact, the actual remit can be as simple as drop test, failed, cap off.
Check service, check adjacent properties, check incoming service entry points, bye bye.

They don't even have to look at the appliance.

Why should they do things for free? They arent a charity repair service. End of the day, its NOT their equipment, they'll make it safe - end of story, like it or lump it thats the way it is.

err and don't forget the time scale bonny lad 15 mins in the north east of england and i know it is cos ive been there when the customers phone rang

for the transco lad

Was 30mins they were targeted to achieve for an internal gas escape. Don't know what it is now United Utiities/Northern Gas Networks are in charge up here.... then again I was a govenor technician so never saw much of the escape lads.

The crux of the matter is this:

1: The workman found a 'leak' on the cooker
2: The workman has little or no understanding of pilot lights on cookers - why would he?
3: He is not competent to turn the pilots off as he does not know what they are!
Now, we enter the responsible on non-responsible aspect of the job.

Responsible: TURN OFF, not qualified on the appliance
Irresponsible: Give it a go.... what the hell. What do these little levers do. Which way do they turn.... er... I dunno. Oh well, s.h.i.t or bust eh!
.
Tony, your missing the whole point of this. Your double standards abhor (sic) me. Bl ood he ll man..... a soleniod from a guy who we all know can change it.

Dont be eletist because your an RGI. So am I and I try to help people safely. The topic is still viewable so I guess admin is next for you.
