I always do mine early, I try to get it done asap so I know how much tax to save, otherwise I spend it. We have 10 months to do it from year end to 31st Jan.

How can around 1 in 12 people miss the deadline though?

Not sure it's the law of averages - when you have 10 months to do something but still manage to be late, that is something else!
Apparently 700,000 wait until the 31st Jan to do it, and 24,000 wait til the final hour.

Because it's a fudger to log in?
At least, that was our experience this year, when trying to submit my wife's return.
"wrong username", "you already have an account", "enter the code we sent you", "code timed out", etc etc etc.....

How much of that was my wife's doing though, is anyone's guess....

the HMRC sites is really confusing, there are numerous ways to log in

and they have this complicated security thing that goes through the post office, royal mail and other options.

I told HMRC that I haven't got a computer and don't know how to work them, so I do paper returns.

Haven't had to do one lately.

It's something with HMRC written on it, so should be handed immediately to your accountant.
