My comment ( now edited) was aimed at 1471 for last caller etc.

My mate lived opposite a callbox,he used to ring his bookie by tapping the receiver rest the appropriate number of time with a slight gap
I used to do this in a youth club that had a lock on the dial, when i mention it nowadays i get comments more or less calling me a liar, god know's how i learned it (well before google).

I confirm that it works.
I used to call my girlfriend using this method when my dad put a lock on the phone.
For the youngsters, phones in the old days had a round circle with numbers that you had to twist and release to dial.
Google it.

Same reason for me,wish it didn't work, then i may have married someone else:)

When I was living in Sweden (long long ago) I had occasion to call the police from a call box. Vandals had ripped off the dial, so I used the tapping method. In Sweden you just had to remember to add one to each pulse train because their dials started at 0.

I seem to recall being told if you played tones down the modern tone dial phones you could dial out that way and you could buy a gizmo to do it

We used to remove the Allen key that held the tall great casing, stand the casing on the directories shelf with the phone still connected. Then, the whole guts of the phone could be lifted out. We'd turn them upside down, block up the slot that the coins dropped through into the cash box with a piece of screwed up paper then refit it all back together. We'd then return after a few days, repeat the procedure, remove the blockage and shake all the coins out. Repeat. Spend your loot on fireworks.

If you can get the tones to the exchange then it won't know or care that they came from a handheld device rather than the phones keypad.

I'm pretty sure most payphones won't turn on the microphone until you give them money, but I bet a tone pad would work on many of the phones that have buttons with pre-programmed numbers (provided for calling taxies etc).

Mottie

Went to boarding school in the 70s and used to dial 160 to listen to the latest "ditties".

my dad used to lock the phone and i worked out the clicks where pulses and indeed replicated by tapping the phone handset cradle contact buttons

When phone numbers were 9 numbers long and 01 was the London dialling prefix, those those numbers were London numbers.

01 470 8402 was my old house number in Plaistow
01 471 4206 was my old house number in Plaistow (Had 2 lines, business and private).
01 472 - Plaistow/Upton Park
01 473 - Canning Town
01 474 - Plaistow/Canning Town
01 476 - Canning Town/Silvertown/Custom House/North Woolwich number.
01 478 - Ilford/Manor Park.

Time is of the essence

https://www.ukphoneinfo.com/isle-of-skye-edinbane-area-code

When STD was first introduced the area code for Gravesend was OGR4 so callers dialled 0 474 xxxxxx and London was 01 xxx xxxx

Then the London area code changes to from 01 to 020 with seven digit numbers becoming eight digit by being pre-fixed with 7 inner London and 8 outer London

Then the area code for Gravesend can be changed to 01 474
