I agree Sparks, although you aswel as I know that any circuit should be designed so that a phase earth fault should operate the OCD.

A phase to earth short would probably have operated the OCD, however an arc is a different problem!
The poor joint was the start of this problem.

Depends really on the setup, some submains can have RCDs as long as they discriminate i.e. using type S.

i've seen holes you could put your fist through in boxes when things have gone bag in a big way! I should have taken a picture of the 240mm ish lead sheath swa which kicked off between phases due to damp, it burnt two cores completely away. on further investigation the OCB protecting it had a fault on the tripping mechanisam..

You find a lot of those working in shops, schools, offices, etc. If it works, leave it alone.
