Remembrance Day

I spent my 2 years service sitting at a desk and going almost home every evening at five o'clock.
REMF :):)

All joking aside, you "did your bit", you're entitled to it, claim it and wear it with pride. I presume that you're speaking of the veterans' badge?

I would have felt very guilty claiming it, let alone wearing it. I spent my 2 years service sitting at a desk and going almost home every evening at five o'clock.

Wear it with pride.

We wouldn't win any wars if our soldiers don't get paid and fed. And someone's gotta order the fuel or else the tanks don't go anywhere.

Is it Belgium that has that massive resting site full of crosses, and has anyone actually visited it?

Both of our kids have been on school trips. I suspect that every school does this. It's almost part of the national curriculum! (It's not a bad idea really. Much better than dozing off in boring history lessons.)

I've been to one, I was reasonably young so can't remember which one it was, however, even now I remember it as a sombre experience, very quiet place. Indeed, LEST WE FORGET. It always gives me a bit of hope for humanity, when I see that every year the wreaths around our village war memorial are replaced, and I mean replaced, they are never touched all year round.

Watching some of the WW1 footage, it chills me to the bone thinking about what these kids must have gone through.

got drenched with the wife and kids watching the parade, small sacrifice me thinks.

i can only imagine what it was like in 1914 - 1919.

Same here. A really moving day. Many pictures taken of the surviving gentlemen of WW1 who laid their wreaths, along with our current armed forces who have lost comrades / friends.

The rain.... hardly noticed it (like you I guess).

I have visited a lot of the WW1 cemeteries paying my respects to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. My great uncle is commemorated on the memorial wall at Arras along with 35,000 others who have no known grave. There are lots of smaller cemeteries which have a special place in the history of the local villages and surrounding areas. Well worth a visit to remember the fallen and all those who fought for freedom whether uniformed or not, and those from other nations, on both sides.

I served 27 years in the RN and feel honour bound to show my respects to all the veterans and their families because they served too.

Thank you for your service.

Between getting out of my car and going in Sainsbury’s, it was 11.00. I walked into what looked like the whole shop frozen in time as everyone stood and respected the silence. It was good to see a young parent come in behind me with two young children and she stopped still as soon as she saw everyone and 'shushed' her children.

Its good to hear David Dimbleby's commentary again too

I'm visiting the Somme area for the 6th time this next summer, that will take in Ypres, Vimy Ridge and Albert.
A great uncle of mine lies in the Peronne Road cemetery, Maricourt. One of three brothers that died in WW1 but the only one with a marked grave.

Do you go on organised trips or just stay in a hotel and hire a car? I suspect some of the organised tours might be a rip off but its difficult to tell the difference sometimes.

I did a bus tour of the Normandy D-Day beaches and local cemeteries a couple of years ago. A bit pricey, but the knowledge of the tour guide who told us some of the emotional stories behind the names of the headstones, was well worth it.
