We should give Asylum.

Stop calling people racist as it will loose its meaning.

It can't lose its meaning when it's true.

Stop being racist and generally prejudiced would be the better solution

People are too quick to call people racist now, even when it's not an actual racist comment. It is damaging because it shuts down debate.

Does it?

Which of the people on here have spontaneously stopped, after their racist posts have been called out?

Whilst people are blatantly racist there will never be an opportunity to discuss it properly.

It is always the same few that make the comments. They need exposing, they damage all of us in civilised society.

Racism and prejudice is different to immigration and its benefits and disadvantages.

Exactly. So calling a person a racist has done what exactly?

Surely it is better to focus on what people are saying, to engage, to explain than just try and lord it? People when called names will become defensive and not listen. It closes debate and this is far more harmful in the long run.

I tried to argue recently that the truth cannot be racist but noseall (said he) disagreed with me - so...

Of course, neither Pakistani nor muslim is a race.

There's only one race the human race and the term racist is a terminological inexactitude. A person being a Muslim is a religious definition not racial.

One can't really be a racist, we know what it means but all humans are members of the one human race there isn't different human races, perhaps a better term would be ethnicitcist !

But the lady in question should be given asylum her life is at risk.

Not true and it's rather sad that you think so little of your fellow man.

You also have seemed to have forgotten how much people's views have already changed so much. In this country we have already improved - we no longer find certain words acceptable, we no longer see racism on mainstream TV in the guise of comedy shows. This is down to what? Education, listening to those who spoke up to explain how wrong it was and how it made them feel.

We will keep improving. But we won't improve if we shut down debate by just screaming 'racist' at every single point of view that isn't perfectly PC. Why? Because many people do not realise they are being racist or think they are racist. How are people going to understand if it's not explained?

The problem EFL is that race itself is a social construct
What does that mean?

- something we use to categorise humans into groups based on their physical or social qualities.
To some extent it is physical characteristics.
What is a social quality?

It is not something intrinsic
Yes it is.

and thus you would find it hard pressed to argue you are right and someone else is wrong because it is not based on a factual understanding but your view of what race is versus someone else's.
It might be in some cases; definitely not in what I said in this thread.
Pakistani is not a separate race and neither is muslim.
Both Pakistani and muslim can include different races, ergo they cannot, in themselves, be races can they?

So you can make the above statement and argue it, but then someone else can refute that-
If anyone refutes it then they will quite simply be wrong.

and neither would be wrong.
One would. Clue - not I.

You can't argue with facts but you can with truths as they depend on someones perspective and experience.
I should like you to explain that.

Q. Are there people of different races who are British?
A. Yes.
Q. Can British, by definition, be a separate race?
A. No.

Substitute Pakistani; same answer.

Q. Are there people of different races who are muslim?
A. Yes.
Q. Can muslim, by definition, be a separate race?
A. No.

If anyone disagrees, they are wrong no matter what their perspective and experience.

Q. Have you ever heard the expression that a child is of a mixed race?
A. Yes.
Q. What, then, if both parents were British, Pakistani, muslim?

Don't forget, many of the Pakistanis were refugees from India after partitioning (and who had that idea?) - and many non-Muslims living in what is now Pakistan were forced to move to India. Same people, just have different beliefs.

In fact, at the moment, and in the past, far more Muslims are persecuted by other groups than are members of radical terrorist groups. Skim through this page and you might understand why some (a minority) of Muslims are so angry. I still hear people talking about the French and Scots as if Agincourt and Bannockburn happened last week, so no surprise really - some people cannot give up the hate.

Most Muslims are peaceful people. Radical government leaders and terrorist groups are usually the main problem, but that is the same everywhere in the world, regardless of religion and race.

And, there was a time when Muslims and Christians happily lived and fought together: "the fact remains that in the history of Europe, for hundreds of years, Muslims and Christians shared common cultures, spoke common languages, and did not necessarily see one another as 'strange' or 'other.'"

Muslims today are more likely to be killed by other Muslims than by Christians.
Yemen, Syria and Afghanistan muslims are killing fellow Muslims.

Don't worry about it. If some old guy says he doesn't like Burkas however......outrage!

Maybe you need to use the word racist less and aim it even less often as well then.
People associate religion with race or ethnicity, the term Muslim is synonymous with people with brown faces, when people hear the word Muslim they think of Turbans and camels and not of blond blue eyed N.Europeans.
I know an Indian bloke who is Hindu and he complains about people assuming he is Muslim.
The real problem is ignorance not racism
