When Did it All Start To Go Wrong?

But then how does a "working man" with a mortgage feed himself during his tenure?

Part of a politicians problem is that they need to get votes.

The two World Wars. Ever since those, politicians have had to administer ever-dwindling budgets and hindered by the creation of the welfare state and the National Health Service. Being in debt has become normality and it has become impossible for a politician to be conservative.
If we all subscribed to the old adage, "neither a lender or borrower be", the banks would go bust in a week.
The financial parasites who run the world need us to be in debt, otherwise they would cease to exist.

Maybe started going wrong in 1911 when they started paying MPs a salary.
MPs used to be unpaid, this meant working class people couldn't afford to become politicians.
Only the rich could get involved in politics or they could sponsor someone to advocate on their behalf.
This resulted in the complete corruption of the political system.
A better way would be to ban political parties from accepting donations from private sources.
Parties should be funded by the state just like their MPs.
