I agree that physical treatments should be banned until later in life. But what about counselling etc? Is it better to deal with the issues at an early stage to prevent possible mental health problems?

Have you looked at the details of the offences and the sentencing? Start with that.
Many would have been regarded as peaceful protestors or simple public order offences in the U.K. none would have been sentenced to double digit time.
