We were striking as we as tradesmen at the BBC in the 80's were being paid the same as the cleaners and only asked for parity with the other trades such as the chippies no more no less, we were out on strike for just 8 weeks but during that time picketted several venues including the one where i saw things that will stick in my mind forever maybe not on the scale of what the miners put up with but still disturbing when up to then I thought we lived in a democratic and just society.
We picketted the Rock and Pop award ceremony in Park Lane in the 80's and what was a peaceful protest soon became a show of strength by the police, I for one was threatened with arrest merely for chanting what we believed was an innocent phrase, "what do we want" "when do we want it, now!" "what happened to freedom of speech?" I said to the officer anyway we were dispersed and a few of us were walking up the side of the building when the police for no reason released their dogs on us!
we ran as fast as we could some banging their hands on the sides of the BBC Scanner vans(huge lorries where the production sit on OB's) that were parked up beside the building nothing more than that.
The next day Jonathan King who was presenting part of the show, in his Sun newspaper column wrote of the electricians surrounding the Scanner vans and rocking them and finally topping these vehicles of god knows how much tonnage over!

and as King(he was in the building at that time not in any of the scanners unless he was the invisible man and walked straight past us) and other members of the production crew crawled out on their hands and knees they were set upon and beaten over the heads by the electricians with spanners!

such lies to discredit us what spark goes around with a spanner in his pocket around town?? unbelievable but an eye opener to what the system can do to discredit someone in the eyes of the public and it worked as we faced a lot of abuse from members of the public at future picket lines.
I was an eye witness to what went on and i know none of what that future pervert King said was true, good job he got his come-uppance later on in life when his sexual practices as a paedophile were revealed of which he was convicted and jailed.
