My daughters school have phoned today, they are 'doing' electricity in 2 weeks, they want me to do some 'maths & electricity' with the kids.

Problem is they are 4+

Now I have thought of measuring resistence of equal x section and varying lengths

And equal lengths and varying x sections

Has anyone got any other ideas.

Didn't think i would end up 'teaching' again

A good one to do is to make a one of those steady hand games with a couple coat hangers, some plastercine, a battery and a buzzer......

Actually make it with the kids...

hows about a dangerous and a safe carricter that lives in the wires
mr sparky makes the tv work then explain the working off the electricity and maybe explain how batteries are safe because they are small and not big enough for mr shock to get inside

and mr shock that leaves wires and broken socket for children to play with to injure and maybe kill them so dont touch any wires or poke things in sockets

why not make a working model with paper clips wire battery ect

let your mind go mad and get your sons help he will give you some good story ideas and tell you if your ideas are fun or to scary

Continuity- via wire and buzzer game as lectrician mentioned.

Conductivity of materials- show that wood and plastic doesn't via multi meter.

Voltage via a volt pen indicator, static via wool jumper and a blow up balloon

Simple circuit via battery and light bulb

Complex circuit via some Xmas tree LED's with a controller for pattern and flash rate

Danger electricity can hurt- mega one of the naughty kids !! Or charge up a capacitor

I'd start them off with safe isolation, termination of common accessories, basic dead tests.

Then move onto the live testing and go through some cable calcs.

By the end of the day you'll almost have a class of NICEIC DI's

How about asking the school what is on the curiculum for that year?

I remember when I was about that age we had a bloke from the DNO come with some scrag ends of cable from up pylons and a video.

Resistance etc I think is only done in scondary school. They just need basics like voltage being a pushing force - speed, and current being an amount of electricity. Maybe introduce a couple of equations to them.

But as I said, its best to just ask the school whats on the curiculum. A few simple demos with a lab pack voltage supply and a bulb and switch.

cheers guys all good suggestions.

Steve since we were at school the curriculum is pretty simple it uses a spiral didactic system!!!!!! In other words same **** every year just add a bit on!!!

Thing is it has to be maths related to electricity so whilst H&S stuff is a forgone conclusion at the start I still have to deliver mathematics related stuff.

i.e. measure numbers and decide why they differ. Will do the grid structure if time permits

have already considered IR testing the Head Teacher!!! Well let the kids do it

take a wind up megger.. show them that it hurts more the faster it turns, hence why frequency is measured in hurtz... :)

How about a prize for the kid who can keep his or her tongue across the terminals of a PP3 for the longest?

Are they paying you?

Or is the teacher who SHOULD be teaching the class going without pay for the day as well?

How about making a battery out of a lemon? How many lemons does it take to light an led? Which makes the better battery? lemon? potato? apple? onion?
